It could also be that you've used the 1.5x setting, which is the same as the 3.5x setting, and that would give you nearly 300MHz. Here's the conversions:
1.5x=3.5x, used mostly by Intel for the Pentium 233MMX, adopted by AMD for the K6-233
2x=6x, only on high speed K6-2's such as the 366, 400, etc. Probably implemented by AMD to allow easier production of overdrive CPU's such as those by Evergreen Technologies.
so use the 2x setting, if you have it right it will run at 6x, regardless of what BIOS says.
