A7N8X-Deluxe and Dual Channel?

I got my replacement ram and they individually test out perfect but when I put them in dual channel mode together, all hell breaks loose, with either in slot 1-3 or 2-3 config. So I had a huntch with slot 3. I put a chip into slot 3 only and the computer wouldnt start or I got artifacts in the post screen and even my floppy drive would get stuck on its post check. A few times I had to flash the CMOS just to get it to snap out. I have tried the relaxed timmings that GEIL recomended to me with no success. Dont have the manual on me right now but you cannot just put a waffer into slot 3 with out something in either slot 1 or 2? I do have the FSB at 430 right now so my northbridge is already under stress and it may not be able to OC over and do Dual chanel at the same time.

If I put the pair into slot 1-2 it works fine. So my analysis on this lead to either 2 things:

1. My slot 3 is defective
2. My mobo will not do dual channel when OCed over 200mhz

What is yall's input on this?

Could just be your ram. I get 450 FSB (225/225) easily with kinston Hyper-X slotted 1/3. Twin mos is also known to get there in dual channel. Nforce2 boards are known to be picky with getting high FSB in DC, and each makers boards are somewhat different with regards to ram and OC'ing. You might try the uber bios if your not running it already. Im sure your AGP is locked @ 66 Too, and CPU throttle is disabled, and fast writes is disabled - right?

By the way newegg has winbond BH-5 PC3700 (buffalo tech) right now, my source there tell me they only have 16 sticks left.

ASUS motherboards are configured, as stated in the manual, to only operate dual band on slots 1 & 2. The bars can be either single or double sided but only double sided produces dual bandwidth. Slot 3 is for single sided bars only. The installation order is 1, 2, and then 3. Using 3 with dual band on 1 & 2 will result in a performance hit.

Sorry but I was wrong about slot 3, you can use dual load memory there as well. However, dual bandwidth only works on slots 1 & 2. The manual gives you the impression that you can use more than two slots. To be safe only use slots 1 & 2.

What are you talking about? ONLY slot 3 can enable dual channel on this mobo. Banks have nothing to do with channels.

The only time you will take a tank in performance hit if slot 1&2 does not equal slot 3. In dual channel, you have to have slot 3 equal to the total of slot 1-2.

I can do dual channel on slot 2-3 config and 1-3 but cannot break over 200 clock. The nforce2 chipset can take single bank or twin bank ram on any slot, just best to keep the same type all over.

Im just not seeing you logic, pleae rethink and retype.

Hmmm wat is uber bios? I dont doubt that the nforce2 chipset is a bitch with OCed dual channel. I did notice when I memtest in dual channel with clock at 200 that the heatsink on the northbridge is VERY hot. I guess thats to be expected with a passive cooler.

I dont belive that the RAM is at fault for it should run pc3500 speeds in dual channel just fine but my mobo is the restrictive factor. I just need to find a better HSF for the Northbridge

Or you could just pull the NB heatsink off and use AS3 on it. Typically under the northbridge a horrible dab of goop is under there from the mobo manufacturers, and it's not "spread" like it should be.

Uber bios can be found here. In your case I would not recommend it though unless you see a need for it.

Even if your ram is PC3500 it can still have fits above 200 depending on the brand and timing ratings - and your own expertise with settings.
