Celeron 2.4 still beats P4 2.4

Hi guyz,

I need a little help from you.I did a partial upgrad to my system.

Asus p4s800 MB, celeron 2.4(box version...so using intel fan) , pc3200 512 ram, my old video card sis 8 meg (going to get a new one soon)

It's my first time overclocking and I used the perfomance test that came with my norton to see how the improvement was. The interesting news is, the celeron; overclocked managed to surpass P4 at lower speeds.
The tests were math +-*/, floating point +-*/,math max megaflops, memory, mmx, sse and 3dnow.

The thing is that upon comparing with the baseline, only p4 2.8 managed to edge out the celeron oc'ed at 2.88 and 2.952 respectively.p4 2.66 was surpassed on all account by 2.5 to 4%. Taking into consideration of the price between the 2 processors, is it worthwile for mid range users like me to go for celeron instead of P4?

Another thing...while i was oc'ing to max at 2.952 earlier, at 123mhz (my memory is syn mode) my pc was running fine. I switched back to 2.4 and left the pc on. Later in the evening I tried again but i could go no higher than 2.88 that's at 120mhz fsb.why was i able to hit higher earlier in the day? Using the probe i found the temperature is about 4 degress higher compared when o'ced.
while running processor at 100%, the temperature was at 47deg celcuis. I am using the box fan.

Considering this is it advisable to oc at all. If yes to what lvl and should i meddle with the voltage relating to my average aluminium cooler and the maximum cpu temperature? My ram is cl3, does it have any chance of tweaking? Will increasing my ram voltage cos the ram to heat? When i set ram to 400fsb, the system crawls but when i set auto runs find. Could you help on this too?
I'm running xp on my pc.

thanks

JUST AN UPDATE...I RAN SANDRA AND THE SCORE SHOWS MY PC EDGING OUT P4 2.66 ... BY THE WAY I'VE REDUCED MY SPEED TO 3GHZ. (DUN WANNA FRY MY CHIP). :)
so..back to the same question...is buying P4 2.4 worthwile comparing the price to celeron?

how is it that tweaking the voltage does not see any improvment?

Try some application benchmarks, those synthetics don't tend to show the true defficiency found when the limited cache can't fill the pipe following a miss.

will do that thanks...

just to update info...
I tried at 3.2 ghz, the system booted up but didn't run xp,now at 3.118 it seems to work fine so far, i checked the ram which was the reason for not being able to go higer earlier on.
Now i've reduced it 426mhz. i tried the voltages but no difference. At 133 fsb was 3.2 now i reduce it to 128.

At intel it is stated as 71 deg cel. max ...does that mean if my chip temp goes to 60 , it's still ok?

your help is much appreciated...
thanks

65 is borderline for stability at stock speed in my opinion, but I've no way of telling what temperature will destabilize any particular system. Overclocking tends to increase temperature sensitivity. 60 won't hurt the CPU but could cause stability issues.

err...one more thing...
my ram is on auto voltage mode and running at 426mhz now.
i believe the default is 400. do i have to increase my voltage? does running at higher voltage decrease lifespan of ram?
thanks for your help

What kind of memory do you have?

-Intel PIV 2.6C @ 3.575G -Asus P4P800 -OCZ Copper 2x256 4000EL memory @ 275mhz 3-4-4-8 -XFX 5900 128meg 450/900 -SB audigy -120G Maxtor Diamond Plus9 S-ATA150 hdd -450 Enermax PSU

Then stay under 2.7 vdimm if you don't have heatspreaders.

thnx scott , my ram dun have spreader so i'll stick to lower volate(anyway the bios maxs the ram volt. at 2.7)
...by the way just like to check...
how is it you guys are running past 200mhz fsb while i can't go over 130??
my processor is still cool enough ...
i tried setting to full voltage at 1.6
the temp rose from 25 to 33 when idle and reaching max of 49
..but when i run prime 95 at higher speed it gives a hardware failure error.
but my windows run fine...
should i ignore this or run at a lower speed till prime runs without crashing?
thanks for your reply

Because our default FSB is at 200, your default is at 100.

one more help pls... i ran sandra software information...it says my bios may be corrupt or something and try reinstalling..but the version is latest 1005. should i flash my bios though i could see not problem in any programs?
how to verify whether sandra is correct?

one more thing though...with so much of oc talk and hs fans..i just want to know what happened to peltier coolers?
It was in 99 when i assembled my pc that i heard about them in reviews here. It can bring the temp really low but the only drawback was condensation. But now since water cooling has become a norm (considering no leakage), why isn't the cheaper but more powerful peltier isn't in the market?

thanks for the answers

you're looking in the wrong places bud, peltiers are still around, now most people watercool their peltiers; you might want to go to http://www.extremeoverclocking.com for more pletier info.

i think u got me wrong... i tried to search peltier elements in THG but could not find a link..
by the way could u give me a direct link cos i'm unable to find it at heastsink factory...:( and also here at THG?
i believe the peltier was using current to transfer heat from the processor. Just that it was so long ago ..that i'm having trouble recalling the exact work of it.
thanks for the trouble....
