I think if it's a single user, then you can go to control panel-> User accounts ->change the way user logs on ->use welcome screen. I dont have any other accounts and no password for this one either. So i just get the welcome screen and it's straight to windows from there. But i'm not too sure about it.

Download TweakUI from the Microsoft site. It allows you to specify an automatic logon at system startup -- the logon screen will still appear, but only for a second before it disappears itself and logs you on.

Do you know how to disable the naked photo of Bill Gates that pops up every time I start Windows?

Emma... I'm kinda angry at you because you converted PooBaa from the superb Win2k to the awfull memory hogging WinXP.

You need some punishment, and not spanking or anything else you like.

Windows ME. The ultimate punishment. That'll do it.

Do you even have any experience using XP? I thought you didn't own it?

Oh I've worked on several PCs with WinXP installed on them although I (luckily) don't own it myselve. All those system where horribly slow and buggy while the hardware was pretty fast.

My experience tells me it sucks ass.

I think WinXP is great.
I have worked on Win2k and it seems to be the same as WinXP. But WinXP is way more user friendly and multimedia enhanced.

Well I don't think the awfull eye-candy and weird automatizedc things make XP user friendly, sertaintly not the way all the useless services slow it down.

Win2k is way more straight to the point which makes it very user friendly IMHO.

WinXP gives you the option to turn off the 'eye candy' and use the Win2K GUI.

After replacing my nVidia grahics card with an ATi card I have become very appreciative for having 'services' available with a single mouse click.

I love XP Pro myself...

I shut my computer down daily.
As well I delete all temp files and temporary Internet files daily.
I would be concerned that the registry would get too corrupted if I left the computer on for an extended period of time.
Some of the machines we have at work are on for weeks at a time and when they are shut down they don't nor do they boot up properly.
Do you have problems like that?

Nope. I once ran a linux box for a few months. This one has done 50 days before once, no problems.

My brothers work linux machine was up for almost a year straight with no power downs or reboots. That's nuts.

My Win2k machine always stays on. Several months ago it would stay on for weeks at a time with no reboots, and would work fine. Recently though, all games stopped working on it and it starts freezing. Not sure what's going on. Maybe I'll do a reinstall one day...

My WinXP machine is shut down pretty much every night. It rarely has problems, and is pretty rock solid. The only program that has any problems is Counter-Strike crashing out, but I've always had problems with that game. I don't think it has ever frozen up on me... I really like XP, as it seems to be faster than 2000, and just as stable.

Lately I've been just letting the machine stay on all the time. I think I reboot every couple of weeks. It's pretty good.

Nonetheless, I still have the damn problem with explorer.exe hogging up all the CPU cycles if I don't keep an eye on it. I think I'm gonna do a fresh install after I move.

LOL... taking XP and using the Win2k GUI, sounds odd don't you think?

And what do you mean with services available with one mousclick?

Yes it does sound odd.
But some people feel XP is a resource hog.
