ASUS A7N8X & 2500Barton Multplier

Hey everyone, I was hoping someone might be able to tell me if I'm doing something wrong, or if I'm just sh!t outta luck.

I've had my 2500Barton up to 2.3G with a 200FSB, but it would always crash when gaming. (never under tests though)

So, I backed it down to 2.1 at 166FSB and it's stable now.

I had tried several MP's at the 200FSB, but now want to try higher multipliers (13+) so I did the little wire trick on the CPU's bottem side.
It appears to have worked because my BIOS lets me select, and it SHOWS me the 13-20 or so Multiplier as being selected BUT then when I reboot, I only get the lower numbered equivalent of 5-12.5.

Why isn't it sticking to the higher range?

(PS. yes I'm really sure that I'm seeing the higher range. prior to the mod I could never actually see the higher numbers in the 'selected' field in BIOS) :)

Thanks!

BA

My A7N8X is running my 2500+ very happily at 2325MHz, with a 186MHz FSB and the multiplier set at 12.5. 188MHz made mine unstable, so if you can get your multiplier any higher, let me know.

It's crashing because there's not enough voltage, you can't change multiplier because the new batches has locked multipliers.

Thanks for the attention guys...

I did try bumping the voltage. I had worked it up slowly and even though it worried me, I even went to the highest setting. (what was that 1.8 or 1.85?) I was still getting the instability at 200x 'pretty much anything'. :)

I should have mentioned previously that I do have a Global Win HSF. It's the CAK4-88T. I thought it was rated pretty good when I bought it, but now I don't recall where I read the review at. Here's a peek at the HSF though.

After reading here and elsewhere, I'm wondering if it's got enough cfm flow. It certainly LOOKS impressive if nothing else! :D
From reading here and over at ocforums.com I still haven't figured out why I can select, but not 'keep', the higher multipliers yet.

I purchased the CPU on May 19th 2003. I do not know my stepping thing, but I *assumed* that since I could freely change my MP between 5-12.5, that I should also be able to do it at the upper range.
Is that a safe assumption??? It's not locked only away from the higher multiples is it? I haven't read about that happening.

PS. I'm glad to see someone else having a bit of trouble too! :) I haven't tried any FSB between 166 and 200, but maybe I should if I can't get the higher MP.

Trust me I know what I'm doing... ooops, grab the cat...
