Earlier today I bought and installed an BBA ATi Radeon 9700Pro retail box card.
So what was all the hype about this card? Hell it's not even a current ATi product anymore and it's like only a $100 bucks cheaper than the 9800Pro.
I install the drivers from the CD ROM that came with the card and the freaking ATi install wizard crashes. WTF?
I had to download and install the latest drivers from ATi to get the thing working right.
I knew I had a good reason for flipping the finger at the ATi headquarters everytime I drive by it on the highway. To bad I couldn't remember what it was when I bought this silly card.
My old card was a NVidia GeForce4 Ti4400 built by MSI.
I should have stuck with NVidia.
And yes I know how to uninstall NVidia drivers and software before installing an ATi card.
Out of all the ATi cards I have owned I think the best one was the BBA Radeon 8500.

I was thinking about buying a 9700 pro but you know you're right, I want to stick with nvidia. They need more customer loyalty right now anyhow.

I don't think I'm a fan boy.
I've switched camps a few times. I have had 3Dfx cards, Nvidia cards and ATi cards.
I still think the Radeon 8500 BBA retail box was the best out of them all.

The drivers that came with my brothers card were kinda old. The card didn't really shine until he downloaded new drivers from the net. It was crashing every once in a while until he installed the 3.0's.
Personally I don't screw around and I always do a clean install when I install a GFX card. It's not that I've had any problems and decided to do this, but it's just a matter of not wanting to have problems period. Kinda like the head and shoulders commercial.
Turn on all the goodies. That card will mow down any Ti. I don't have any experience with the 9700P, but my brothers 9500P put both Ti 4200's and the Ti 4600 that I tried out to shame.

I'm not looking forward to a reformat and reinstall.
It just takes too bloody long. And the wife gets really pissed off when I do it cause I'm sitting in front of the computer for two days tweaking it. Literally two days.
I had no problem going from ATi to Nvidia. But it seems to be a lot more complicated going from Nvidia to ATi.

I don't know. I just figure it's less hastle doing a clean install than getting pissed off at the computer because of some stupid driver issue. I did a clean install going from 3dfx to Nvidia. I've done a clean install going from Nvidia to 3dfx. I just figure it's less trouble. I've read the threads here and everyone says the same thing: Do a clean install.

Erm, sometimes to update drivers for ati u need to do a format reinstall too. Such a turnoff- I'm not backing up 200gigs (ie buying another hdd) for some dipsh!t vid card. Bet u if u took polls here too it'd be ati fanboyism too.

Turn on the AA and turn on the Anisotropic Filtering. That card can handle it. I didn't play around with it too much, but you can either let the game pick it or you can force each game to use it in the control panel. Start conservative if you want and see how it does. I've read in some places that you might as well just always leave it on rather than letting the game choose, but I don't have very much experience with it since my brother lives kinda far from me.

LOL. I learned a while ago that you should always leave your C: as small as possible. I have a 15GB C: partition and personally I find it too big. The other 305GB are fine and I don't need to worry about when I do a clean install.
Just backup your e-mail, fonts, IM stuff, and any saved games you might have on a C: dependent program.

I'm not saying you're a fanboy, but Kyle of [H] and a lot of others are like, either, "Ati Ati Ati!", or "Nvidia Nvidia Nvidia!", which pisses the [-peep-] out of me. Then again, we hear "AMD AMD AMD!", or "Intel Intel Intel" all the time as well, which is just as irritating. I mean, both companies have solid products, it's just a matter of which technology that has solid experience is really worth buying. I'll agree, the 8500 was a good product.

It's not really that hard. I have a 64MB and a 16MB card. So graduation was about 100MB a day. That's roughly 150MB after getting rid of the crap for both me and my wife (ex). A trip to the zoo is about 64MB after getting rid of the bad pics. X-mas, birthday's, it's not that hard to add up to a gig or so. I'm a bit short of a gig still.

I think it's great that he's posting. His post about some basic rules was mostly caused by Williamette_Sucks by the looks of things. He deleted his post about Forum Bill of Rights and Fredi warned him that he needs to stop calling people names from what I understand.
Tom has been frustrated by the whole thing and all the name calling between websites. He doesn't sound to interested in writing articles right now. I think he sees his chance to pool our thoughts and ideas into getting better benchmarks and reviews out for GFX cards. Lets face it, right now there is pretty much nothing to judge a card by without thinking in the back of your mind, "Did they cheat and am I getting what I paid for?"

I have a 3mega pixel camera so the pictures are really nice and the quality is outstanding. Of course the size of the pictures gets rather large.
Most of the pictures I take are about 700kb each. Sometimes I want to have more to play with though so I take a picture that gets to be 2MB. At it's highest uncompressed rate I think each picture is 8MB.

Although we do get carried away in the other section. I'm really surprised Fredi has not posted a warning about the excessively graphic sexual innuendo that gets spread throughout the Other section.

I think we all think that every once in a while. Lets face it though. This IS the other section.
This website isn't for sexual innuendo, politics, religion, or any of the other stuff we discuss, but it does have an other section.
Every once in a while it gets out of control but personally I think we police ourselves pretty good in here.

It's a free place, and yeah as you said, we police ourselves very well and know not to offend people. Therefore I doubt if he came he would mind it.

If a company is doing so well now, and a majority of people opts for its products, are they fanboys?
I mean, if currently Intel is winning and a lot of its products are now excellently priced (P4 2.4GHZ with HT and 800MT, or P4 2.8GHZ with HT and 800MT being cheaper than the XP3200) and people consider Intel more (say 75% in a poll), why the hell should you have such prejudiced thoughts by calling them fanboys?!
Sorry if I sound angry, but such premature accusations really turn me off.

Well, i've been reading [H] for literally about seven some years now, and almost everytime the forums or polls ask if one would rather get Nvidia/Ati/3dfx, i've seen Ati on the top by some gigantic landslide. Not that I don't believe there's a website that hosts Nvidiots, but all I see is Ati Ati Ati floating around, which in all honesty, pisses me off. [H] has a history, and Kyle is literally a dick about products. Read his reviews, he has a long history with Tom, some of it was ugly.

But a poll generally now, would indeed reveal Intel and ATi as choices around the web.

If nvidia goes out of bussiness we will be left with only one major graphics card manufacturer. If a company has no competition technology advances slower and features are minimal. THINK MICROSOFT. You don't want that do you? Nvidia makes good cards. Even if they have made a few mistakes recently.

because they are the only thing standing in the way of ATI cheating you. and they aren't cheating you think of it this way:
Nvidia was very late getting the fx gpus out due to complications in their design and the manufacturing process. We are at the point where companies have to take their products through a die shrink every few months just for a few extra mhz and this is very hard to do, not only did they go through a die shrink but they switched manufacturers! This costs time and money, a lot of things have gone wrong with this release and many of them could not have been forseen by nvidia and were simply bad luck. Nvidia may still look like a healthy company but they are not- remember all the releases of detenators that used to be common? I remember a time when they were shooting out a new version every 2 weeks. Now when was the last driver release? may? why would a company so good at driver releases be so behind in them? because they are not doing well financially. They had to cut back on the support and drivers and are releasing so many versions as their product in a desperate move to get them sold. 3dfx seemed like a healthy company till the day we all went looking for new drivers and saw the horrorible news. The 3dmark thing and everything else has been capitolized on by ati and its loyal customers creating terrible plublicity for nvidia which up till this release has provided outstanding products and support. Give them the benifit of the doubt, they are in trouble, and now when they need their customers the most where are they? I don't want you to go out and buy a geforce fx, I want you to think about all the bitching you have been doing and ask yourself if it is deserved or not that's all.
Treat your body like a $600 car. God didn't intend it to last so use it. Run it into the ground!
Everything is fine.
It took a couple of hours of searching and I was able to find and delete the nVidia files and drivers. A couple entries seem to be impossible to delete. A few others don't even have a delete option.
Clean up the registry with regedit. Some of the nVidia entries are buried deep in the registry tree.
I don't recall having so many problems uninstalling ATi drivers and software. It just seems that it is impossible remove all the nVidia and associated software completely.
Like I said there still a few files left but getting at the source file seems almost impossible even with all the hidden files displayed. NVidia drivers are like a malignant disease without a cure.
There is an impressive performance increase with the Radeon 9700Pro over the GForce Ti4400.
The reason I don't really like ATi is that they don't make the whole product here in Canada. The GPU's are made in Taiwan and the cards are assembled in China. It means a lot that the product is designed and packaged in Canada. I can understand the reason for outsourcing the manufacture of the GPU. But I don't understand why the cards can't be assembled here instead of China. The cost of assembly per card in Canada would be higher due to employee wages but I would think the cost of shipping the cards from China back to Canada for packaging and marketing would offset higher employee wages.
Plus the ceo/founder of ATi seems a little slimey after he was caught for insider stock trading.
Another point, I really don't think of ATi as a Canadian company because the founders of the company are not Canadians.

Although your post is well thought out, I think it's a bit more than just one card that is the problem. First they gave a sneak peak of the NV30. I remember getting really excited about that thing. It was basically gods gift to gamers. 6 months or so later they finally release it, although it's not what they said it was. It blows. That of course was a paper release though and getting a 5800U was impossible and it took months before people got a hold of the 5800. Driver releases stopped in November of last year. It took them 6+ months to release anything new. Then comes the NV35. Along with it the cheating. And have you seen the instability and problems people are having with all these cards? Worst of all is the interviews in which Nvidia basically told us that this is what we needed and that they foresaw the future being like this: Noisy, large cards, that they consider innovative. That's complete bullshit.
I'm not going to "be there for them". I'm going to be there for whoever releases a good card and doesn't play people like fools. Hopefully they will improve their act though, but if they go under I'm sure someone will fill the void.

unfortunately the whole thing is bad news for everyone. Less competition from nvidia will allow ati to hold back its new technology a bit longer in reserve, nvidia going down would be bad for consumers, they would no longer have any other options for a good card. I see no one on the horizon who could jump up to "fill the void" either. Nvidia cards may not be that great a choice right now boo hoo cry some more. I'm not asking you to "be there" for them, you've all been crying about this for so long I can't take it any longer. You've had a chance to present your position and 3 months of complaining should have been enough! Now that we all know you hate nvidia and all the evil things it stands for will you just can it for a bit and talk about something constructive. I envision a future where fans of the canadian graphics card maker and the American one will live together in peace and harmony, a future full of happieness and glee. A future where my child can grow up and decide for themselves which graphics card they want! WHO'S WITH ME!
