Reading scottchen’s guide to overlcoking a P4, has encouraged me to sell my single stick of Crucial PC2700 33Mhz of ram on ebay and buy some PC3700 or PC4000 so I can run my overclocked P4 2.4c @ 3.0Ghz synchronised with the ram frequency for maximum performance. Also I wanted to make use of the duel channel technology on my MSI Neo2 865PE motherboard.

I have been shopping around and have found the following;

- OCZ 512MB (2x256MB) PC4000 Dual Channel Series £144.14

- Corsair 512MB DDR XMS3700PT TwinX (2x256MB) Platinum CAS3 £107.18

- Corsair 1GB DDR XMS3700PT TwinX (2x512MB) Platinum CAS3£198.19 (Budget limt)

Can anyone here recommend me what I should buy? I mostly us my computer for gamming and video encoding. So would I see the benefits form having 1gig or ram insted of 512Mb of Ram?

I'd get the 1GB of RAM, especially since you are doing video encoding.

You'll probably be able to push it beyond 233Mhz anyway (240ish if I had to guess), which would give you about a 2.9GHz processor.

He doesn't have the budget...but I fully agree with you, the faster the RAM the better for a 2.4C...he could go crazy with it (but I still have my guidelines for a minimum of 1GB RAM in any newer system [hence the recommendation of the PC3700], and 1GB of PC4400 is probably 300ish pounds).

Have you checked if you can run at 3:2 CPU:RAM mode and at 250 FSB? Your mobo should support it. Try it to see if it's stable, then invest in expensive RAM and run at synced mode.

Got a nice overclocked overvolted system to keep you warm at night? That's great. Guess I'll have to settle for a woman...
