PS3 resolution and performance question

I am just wondering, does lowering the resolution of a PS3 down to 720p increase performance of some games? I know that lowering the resolution can help some PC games run better.
I ask because I recently got Zone of the Enders HD collection are there is massivbe frame rate drops in the first level.

you cant change resolution in ps3(except of 1 or 2 games)
