A local Internet store is selling two Radeon 9800SEs which is says have a 256bit memory interface:
1. Sapphire Radeon 9800SE 128MB TV/DVI/2H AGP Video Card OEM -295$
2. Hercules 3D Prophet 9800SE All In Wonder 128MB -349$

I wanted to hear what people had to say here about these cards and if they are worth buying. Will I be able to do a softmod -> 9800Pro with one of these? Also, should I even believe the store that these have a 256bit memory interface?

POST is way overrated, the black screen and beeps should be enough for most people.

okay then since i'm the last one, then in my opinion, the FX5900XT, or a FX5900, would be the best bet, since they gurantee 256bit memory bandwidth. And their price has been dropping, so you could find a full FX5900XT for under 170 bucks.

Thanks for the 2 cents but I'd never buy Nvidia. Why? Uh, umm, because those cards don't run HL2 well?

Those prices are actually very good where I live, I'd hate to imagine how much a 5900 would cost, maybe even north of 400$.

Wow, the only reason i'm recommending Nvidia cards is because where i live they're wicked cheap.

I'd thought I'd post some prices:

Gainward Geforce FX 5900 /1200XP Ultra "Golden Sample" VIVO TV/DVI 128MB -573$
MSI Fx 5900 Ultra 256MB DDR DVI VIVO -722$
Gainward Geforce FX5900 Ultra 1600XP Ultra Golden Sample VIVO TV/DVI 256MB -755$
Gainward Geforce FX 5900 Ultra Water Cooling /1600XP Ultra "Golden Sample" VIVO 256MB DDR Video Card -1123$

And this is from an Internet store which supposed to be cheap.

YOU LOOSE!

When they say 256-bit, they refer to the VPU, not the memory interface. It's right on the Saphire website that it's a 256-bit card, but that's deceiving: ALL Saphire 9800SE cards use a 128-bit memory interface, and ALL 9500-9800 VPU's are 256-bit.

Then are they lying when they say: "Memory Configuration: 128MB DDR
Memory Interface: 256-bit
AGP support: 8x
Connectors: DVI/TV-out/Dual Head" (copy&paste from the website)

Yup, they're lying.

Probably. Every 9800SE I've seen from Saphire comes on their "black PCB" 9500 non-pro PCB, which was 128-bit.

Unless you can find proof that they've changed it.

also sapphire uses really shitty ram in their low end cards...something like etrotech, forget the name. My ram wont do above 300mhz even though its 3.3ns...oh well my core does 450 at stock voltage so i'm happy...

Let me put in my 2 cents on the 9800se. IT SUCKS!!!!! Just go for the gold and get the 9800 pro. That way you get the good ram which is 256bit and stay pretty cool even at OC speeds.

yes...

I'm hoping it will become more overclocking freindly with a voltmod and some ramsinks...but i'm doubtful...

Let me know your results because I know that it is possible to VMod the RAM on my board, its just im not relly inclined to do unless im likely to get good results.

when i vmod i'll post something...i have been busy lately so it probably wont come for another month...but still i will post results. I really hope to get over 500mhz out of my gpu though...that would be nice (currently im at 450 and stock voltages).
