FX5900 series owners, sick of all the fanATIcs bragging about how good their 9800pro is? Well our time to strike back, here is a detailed walkthrough on how to flash your FX5900's bios to FX5950ultra's bios, increasing VGPU by .08, and increasing vdimm by a bit(i'm not sure). This new bios is guranteed to run your card at 475mhz/950mhz core/mem, but I've had pretty good luck with my XFX, with the leadtek 5950u bios, i've managed to squeeze past the 550mhz mark on the GPU, and pass the 1G mark on mem.

There really isn't any risk, it's pretty much fool proof, but just to be on the safe side, back-up your original bios.

Also, stock cool on the FX5900 is sufficient to run at 475mhz/950mhz, so you don't have to worry about changing cooling, but if you really want to push it to the limit, then change to something better.

You can get a 9800Pro for the same price as a 5900nu...I'd get the 9800Pro.

The thought of hitting >5950U performance for only $220 is VERY tempting though.

Maxtor disgraces the six letters that make Matrox.

Are you sure they're the same price? I thought 5900 are priced around 180US, and 9800pro's still at about 230.

In Canada generally the ATI cards are much more expensive than Nvidia ones, currently.

You could always do a volt mod to your 9800pro slap a ice block on it and be happy that you have a godly card, or you could buy a radioactive device that glows red and oc it to prolly better performance than the 9800pro. Either way you have godly like performance, just the nvidia is alright to run at ungodly temps. I know my 9800pro stock doesn't like it's current temps.

But volt mod will void the warrenty:) if you just do bios mod, and you have original, you could just flash it back to the original, and rma if you have to. I totally agree with how hot Nvidia cards are, but with a good ventilation it'll be no problem.

I don't have any pci cards in accept one on the very bottom sound card, and i opened the slot covers up and threw a fan there sucking out all my hot hair from the video card. It dropped my case temp 4c, but it raised my cpu temp, probably due to not enough fresh air getting to the cpu fan.
So of course i took it out.

Johan I think you should push your 9800pro a bit, running at stock speed's for puss*es.

It already puts off enough heat, plus i don't think the fan is on there very good. I'd rather wait till i get some cooling on it. But.. if i did i wonder if i could hit 19k.. I wonder if i can get my machine to 225fsb.. hmm..

I'm really thinking about getting a athlon xp m chip to see if i can get 2800mhz.

Don't bother getting an M chip, all you need is the Prometeia.

If you buy the prometeia, try 2.1Vcore

Prometia is cheating! Not really i've never really looked into them. Isn't it technically like a fridge?

43k mark. 85 dollars went a long way.

sorta...just the gass evaporates right over the cpu...

M chips are pretty good...i have had good luck with a 2400+ M chip (baton based) in a system i set up for a freind. Although his setup is not ideal for overclocking it hit 2.2ghz easy on 1.575v.

If it isn't a P6 then it isn't a processor

Hey you guys... just so you know I just learned that flashing your 5900 to a 5950 can actually keep your card COOLER because the new bios makes the fan run faster. I am ordering a 5900nu very soon and I cant wait to try this out!

Before you do this mod, this is a warning, be sure to run 3dmark03 or 01 on loop for a whole night, make sure the card's not defective and burn the memory before doing anything to it. After making sure it's not defective, overclocking your card using coolbit to 475/950, see if it's stable, if it is then flash your card, you're facing no risk, however if card's not stable at 475/950, it's not recommended to flash the bios.

NEED NEW SYSTEM!

No I wouldn't recommend it, try flashing to Albatron's FX5900 standard's bios, try to overclock your card to 400/850, if it work stabily, then flash, if it doesn't, then don't flash.

I hate my TI4200.
