I have a P4 1.7 Ghz but im not sure if I have an A, B, or C type. Does anyone know of anyway to find out, and does anyone know if I can overlock it even without any special fans or anything.
A, B, and C are Northwood cores. Your's in none of those, it's a Williamette core. It might be Socket 423 or Socket 478. Only Socket 478 boards are compatable with Northwood core P4's. You should find out what board you're using.

All 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.7, and 1.9GHz P4's are Williamette. 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 can be either Willy OR Woody. Williamettes can be EITHER socket 423 or 478.

Acording to MSI this board supports 400MHz bus only. It may support 533 bus by overclocking, but that's chancy. You can probably find a 2.4A, 2.5A, or 2.6A at a discount price now that they're outdated. A stands for Northwood with 400MHz bus.
