All,

A few days ago I've posted asking if National Access has been
disabled.. a lot of people confirmed that it's still working for them.

However, I still can't get mine to work.. qnc/qnc works w/o any
problem, xxxxxxxxxx@vzw3g.com/vzw.. I've tried playing with various
modem strings, however I don't really thing the modem/device is the
problem..

My phone is an LG vx4400, I use the USB-to-Serial Cable. I can connect
to QNC and browse, the vzw3g.com connection stops at authentication
(The phone in both cases states 'QNC[PPP]' when connecting)

I've tried enabling Mobile Web, tried getting Verizon to make sure I
have 1xPP1 and 1xMOU on my account, however still no luck.

All this time, I've been suspecting that I am having trouble b/c I
have been a Verizon Wireless customer for 5-6 years, and some features
were never automatically enabled on my account, therefore my vzw3g.com
account doesn't authenticate..

Can anyone suggest what else to try?
Someone suggested earlier to force the phone into 1x mode only,
however, I couldn't find such an option on this phone. When it dials
up into MobileWeb, it shows an arrow symbol, that in the phone legend
indicates a 1x connection, however the qnc symbol that they have
listed there, doesn't show up with I make a qnc dial up connection.

I have the same 4400 phone and straight thru USB cable. I use
xxx@vzw3g.com with password vzw. In 1X areas, I get very fast 110k data
transfer as verified by toast.net. I believe the 3g network is 1x. My
QNC connection uses qnc as username and password and is 14.4k. Both use
#777 as phone number. Hope this helps.

It sounds as if your system is connecting to the QNC network in both
cases, but using the NA username/password on those occasions that you
are trying to connect to NA. Have you tried completely uninstalling,
then reinstalling, whatever software you are using to connect?

If you are using the Verizon Mobile Office Kit software, it stores the
user IDs and passwords in the registry at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Smith Micro\QuickLink Mobile

For QNC, the username and passwords are both "qnc".

For NA, the username is "yournumber@vzw3g.com" and the password is
"vzw".

The way I remember it from when I had a 4400 is that it has a max baud rate
of 19200. Basically limiting you to 14400 data speed.

I now have an LG VX8000. The init string for use with the 3g network allows
a 3g capable phone (not the 4400) to connect at 115200 (or more with some
phones) with the computer and the 3g VZW network allows 80-100Kbps speeds,
or so.

Bottom line, I don't think your 4400 can do it.

3 baud settings: 19.2, 115.2, and 230.4. As I said in my post with my
4400, I get TRUE data speeds around 110k as tested on toast.net. No
string init or anything special. Works everytime I'm in 1X digital areas.

Wonder why the OP can't do that.

There is no 'special' software that I use. The cable is from
radioshack, the only software installed is for XP to recognize the
cable as a COM port. Then, I manually setup 2 modems, 1 for qnc
another for vzw3g (the modems have different modem init strings), then
I've setup manual dial-up connections, 1 for qnc (using qnc modem) and
1 for vzw3g (using vzw3g modem)..

I can dialup using both, and both will take qnc/qnc password, however
neither will take xxxxxxxxxx@vzw3g.com/vzw password.

If both of your connections will accept the qnc/qnc combination, doesn't
that still suggest that both of them are connecting with the QNC
network?

In your original post, you said that "The phone in both cases states
'QNC[PPP]' when connecting". Does that mean that it says "PPP call" when
you are trying to connect to NA? I realize that these phones are all
different, but my old Kyocera 2235 displays "PPP call" when dialing NA
and "Data call" when calling QNC.

At least on both my Motorola and my Kyocera, when there is a problem
with authenticating to the NA network, it displays "user name or
password invalid on domain", or something very close to that. When I
have seen that on my phones and on other folks' phones, it always meant
one of the following:

1. Your account is not set up for NA. Since you say you enabled Mobile
Web, that can't be it.

2. The incorrect user name or password was entered. You clearly know
what those should be.

3. The hand-coded init string was incorrect. That's my guess.

Keep us posted. I would like to know if there is something else that
can cause this problem.

Check the init string to the phone.

Get mobile web, go into the browser settings, set it to 1x instead of
QNC everywhere, delete the QNC connection profiles. BAsically force the
browser to use 1x. Call data tech support at VZ. and tell them the
error and to fix it, 1 hr on the phone, and they did.My phone is still
1x only, and cant fall back to QNC, and on data cable the 1x works fine
now.

One more item: the mok includes data compression software. This is what
really makes the 1x connection fast. It is called venturi, and it makes
connections FAST! dr

I have never noticed any improvement when using Venturi, except when
performing benchmarks.

Venturi does a great job of compressing text, but who downloads large
uncompressed text files? When downloading hundreds of email messages,
the latency involved in downloading each message far exceeds the time it
takes to download it. Even when telling Venturi to degrade images to
their "Highest speed" I don't see any performance increase.

One man's opinion.

From another post you said you use the cable from RS? (not verizon anyway,
and not mobile office)... Had the same happen with the futuredial cable...
It was the setup/init strings.. Once I called QNC, it never reset the phones
speed when I called 1x until i reset the strings... Ill look for the correct
strings in my notes (changed phones, but I may have the strings written
down)...

Since you have a VX4400, have you seen the online page of all sorts of info
specifically for the 4400?
URL http://www.rogerbinns.com/vx4400/vx4400faq.html

Found this in an old email message.... (express was the old name for what is
now nationalaccess/1x)
>>> try putting this in as your init string: AT$QCMDR=2
>>
>>> change it to AT$QCMDR=3 for the express network

I am also having the same problem. xxxyyyzzzz@vzw3g / vzw doesn't work
but qnc / qnc does. I haven't tried this in 4 months, but the vzw3g
setup used to work for me. I also have a 4400.

This makes me think vzw is deliberately disabling it. I'm in the
Boston home region. Anyone else experience this?

Yes, I've checked it out in the past.
My modem string for 1x connection is AT$QCMDR=3
I think I might've heard what mvl guy replied, that they've been
shutting it down, although dunno why some we'll be singled out. I am in
NYC area.
