I just got a Dlink704p. I'm having 2 issues:
1. I often have to click on links 2 times to get them to come up and sometimes it has a hard time with any site that I have to sign into.
2. I can't get the print server function to work. The instructions for winxp aren't that great and it doesn't seem to find the printer automatically when I try to "add printer" in winxp.

if anyone could help me out I'm a networking noob and I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I also seem to lose my connection a lot more than is normal (like once every hour). Web pages seem to be loading slower than before as well. Someone out there knows the answer.....but where are they?

make sure the mtu's are set apporpriate to your connection here are the direct page addy's for some of the functions. I have rhe 704 withoput the P so I can't help with the print server also clone your MAC to your router it might help

use the form http://192.168.0.1/pmac.htm for instance

These appear to be normal, except there is an old version of the logs: actl.htm Access Control Menu atbox.htm Administrator's Toolbox Menu banner.htm Banner (header) for Router (Part of Index Page) dhcp.htm DHCP Server Menudhcplist.htm DHCP Client List Screen fwug.htm Firmware Upgrade Menu index.htm Default Loading Page menu.htm Default Menu (Part of Index Page) misc.htm Miscellaneous Items Menu pmac.htm MAC Address Control Menu prim.htm Primary Setup Menu rebo.htm Reboot Command smap.htm Virtual Server Menu spap.htm Special Applications Menu status.htm Default Status Page (Part of Index Page) sysinfo.htm System Information Screen syslog.htm System Log Screen syslog2.htm System Log (Verbose) Screen sysp.htm System Paramters Menu (MTU) want.htm Choose WAN Type Menu x.htm Unautorized ScreenThese are help screens: a-port.htm Appendix of Port Services Screen h-actl.htm Help - Access Control Screen h-atbox.htm Help - Administrator's Toolbox Screen h-dhcp.htm Help - DHCP Server Screen h-misc.htm Help - Miscellaneous Items Screen h-pmac.htm Help - MAC Address Control Screen h-prim.htm HELP - Primary Setup Screen h-smap.htm Help - Virtual Server Screen h-spap.htm Help - Special Applications Screen h-stat.htm Help - System Status ScreenThese are on board Gifs: logo.gif Logo pabb.gif Pointer (Blue) parr.gif Pointer (Red) pnul.gif Pointer (Blank) sp.gif Space (Blank)The default Backup Name: config.bin

all of the menus that stuff brings me too is stuff I can get to by just typing in that ip and navigating through it. How will any of that stuff help me and how do I check this MTU?

I set it to that and my connection was still really really slow. I have since taken the router out of the situation for the time being because I sometimes just couldn't load a page and I was getting really pissed. Are there any other settings that could cause these symptoms?

Have a wee look <A HREF="http://www.adslguide.org.uk/guide/mtu.asp" target="_new">here.</A>

Bear in mind this is a UK site, and applies to UK ADSL stuff, so (1): I take no responsibility for any problems. and (2): These settings may or may not make any difference.

<A HREF="http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks" target="_new">Here's</A> a tweak tester, which can recommend settings, and.....it <b>is</b> capable of testing many forms of connection. However, I do recommend you fully read up on any changes it suggests, as one or two can have side effects, and if you don't know what you're doing, you can get problems.

I recommend a backup of registry, system and also router config if applicable, before carrying out any changes.

My two cents would be to deep six that D-link and switch to the 3com gateway. I've had excellent results with it (virtual hosting about 10 domains and file sharing on 8 workstations). Just a suggestion. Good luck.

yeah. I'd do that if I didn't have to send it back to newegg and pay that 15% restocking fee and pay shipping. and plenty have people have made this router work so I'd like to make it work as well.

try the "Hardware by Brand" | Dlink forum at www.dslreports.com I'm betting the help you need for that specific hardware can be found there

AFA print server, did you install and run the dlink print server and client software?

<i>It's always the one thing you never suspected.</i>

guess this forum doesn't get a lot of traffic...or no one knows anything about networking (hard to believe).

problem solved. firmware update fixed my woes. i'd also like to add that the d-link rep was very helpful and friendly.
