If I sign a new contract for my primary line, to take advantage of NE2,
will I also be required at that point to sign a new contract for the
secondary line? I might want to buy a phone for the secondary, but not
the same day as I do the primary. My concern is that if I have to sign
a contract the day I get the new phone for the primary, I'll either
have to buy the phone for the secondary at the same time to get promo
pricing, or else be stuck paying list for it if I buy the scond phone
at a later date.

I just did that, and no, I wasn't required to sign another contract for
the secondary line, since I wasn't getting a discounted phone at the
time. (In our case, we added the family plan a few months later, so
the second phone isn't eligible to be replaced on the same schedule
anyway.)
In my case, I renewed in March (I believe it was), but the contract on
the secondary line still ends in September. We'll probably go ahead
and renew that one when it's eligible for subsidized phone, since my
wife is sick of her T730.

That is correct. Had you upgraded the primary phone at a promotional
price all the family line phones would be included in the new contract
start date.

Errr, this is a pretty confusing statement. What do you mean
by "all the family line phones would be included in the new
contract start date'? ..."start date"?
Each line (whether it is in a family share or not) is considered
as a separate "contract". Easiest way to think about it is this:
Every line is separate for purposes of contract start/end dates
and equipment upgrades.
You can get a lower monthly fee and share a pool of minutes
by grouping lines together under a Familyshare.
Assuming you do not change plans it would be possible to
have the primary line on month-to-month (after the original
contract end date) and one of the secondary line under a
2 year contract due to a recent equipment upgrade.

Yes it is possible to have different contract dates for all of your
phones but not if you upgrade your primary line at a promotional
price.
If you upgrade the primary phone for a promotional price on a family
share plan you must sign a new contract with a new starting date. Your
secondary lines are included and now are under contract even if they
were month to month before.
If you upgrade your primary line at a regular price it affects
nothing.
If you uprade a secondary line at a promotional price you must sign a
new contract but only that phone is affected not all of them.
The above does not affect the dates you are eligible to upgrade each
phone for a promotional price . They remain the same regardless of
what you do with your plans.
This is what I have been told on several occasions by Verizon.
I have never upgraded my wife's Motorola 270c. She loves it and will
not give it up. Even though it has never been upgraded and is still
eligible for a promotional price discount, it is under contract
because I upgraded the primary phone a year ago.
This might be different in other markets. I am in the NYC area.

Yes, exactly. But when you say it that way it confuses many.
The reason the secondary lines are included is that the
familyshare "umbrella" is tied to the primary line. If you
change the plan for the primary (taking promos, etc.) then
the secondary lines are left hanging without a plan. They
must change plans to secondary lines under the new plan
or go to an individual plan.
It's just a way of looking at it which makes it clear for other
things like why they don't qualify for new-any-two, etc.

I find the replies tomomcat_one's question are somewhat confusing and don't
fully answer the question.
When you take advantage of NE2, you will have to sign a new two year
contract. That's a condition of NE2. You *are* taking advantage of a
promotion, the promotion being New Every Two. If you have a family plan,
then the contract is extended for all the secondary lines as well. However,
the end date of contracts and the date you can buy a contract-price phone
are two different things.
So, if you take advantage of NE2 now, you will extend the contract of the
secondary line BUT you can still buy a new phone for the secondary line at
the subsidized price when it is eligible. It is eligible 10 months after
you last bought a phone for that line (at subsidized price) if it is on a
one-year contract and 22 months after the last phone was bought if on a
two-year contract. When you do decide to buy a phone for the secondary
line, it is going to extend the contract for all phones on the family plan
again -- if you take advantage of a promotion. And again, buying a phone at
subsidized price or with NE2 is taking advantage of a promotion.
At least that's the way it is in the Northeast region.

What? What I just said.
Where did I get my info? That's the way it was explained to me and done on
my account when I used NE2 for the first time two years ago. I'm curious as
to which part of what I wrote seems "off" to you, Quick...
I'll be doing NE2 again in about a month. Based on what I've been told I
believe I'll have to change plans because a) the one I'm on isn't current
and b) I have to sign a new two-year to get NE2. Are you saying that when I
sign the new two-year agreement it should only be for my primary line and
not the two secondary lines on my family share? Would the secondary phones
be "orphans" on their own plan according to your information? I'd
appreciate any advice.

My expectation is that you are not changing plans. You are
simply extending the contract/commitment termination date
for that line. Are you dealing with CS or a store of some sort?

After reading Ilene's post I called CS for verification. It seems that
if you upgrade ANY phone on a family share plan you restart the
contract for ALL phones from that date even if you do not change
plans.
This was not my previous interpretation. In fact I'm sure I was told
some time ago that upgrading a secondary phone does not restart the
contract date for the other phones. The CS rep told me this is the way
it has always been. I'm still not convinced this is the case. As we
all know it sometimes takes several calls and a visit to a Verizon
store for the correct answer.

All three lines on my familyshare have different contract
end dates. We have done at least one equipment upgrade
to replace my daughter's destroyed phone. That was a
secondary line. Can't remember exactly when but it was
a Kyocera SE-47 Slider a few months after they came out.
I'll dig up the details on the web when I get home.

If I did not have to change plans I could just extend the contract for two
years, yes. But since the plan I'm on is two years old and no longer exists
it can't be extended. I have to sign a new two-year contract on a plan that
is current. And, since I'm changing plans on my primary line, the secondary
lines have to change plans too -- which means contract extensions all
around.
Other times I had to extend the contract on all lines of my family share:
**When I upgraded my husband's phone (secondary line) and paid the
subsidized price -- no plan change there as the plan was still current but
the contract end date for *both* phones was extended. Perhaps both had to
be extended because it doesn't make any sense for a secondary plan to be for
a longer term than the primary line it's attached to. For example, suppose
you have a primary line that ends next month and then upgrade the phone on a
secondary line so that it (the secondary) ends two years from now. So what
happens next month? Can you terminate the primary line (contract is ended)
and keep the secondary line at $9.99 per month? Obviously not.
**When I added the third line, the other two were extended. Again, paid
subsidized price for third phone.
**When I took advantage of NE2 for my own phone, as described in previous
post.
I am dealing with a Verizon corporate store, not an authorized dealer. I
can't remember a single time in the 3 years I've had a share plan where the
contract end dates weren't all the same. Maybe a regional thing?

That's the way it's always been for me TeddeLI. If the LI means Long
Island, I believe we're in the same VZW region.

Good luck! I agree that it can take several calls to get the answer you
*want*...now whether that's "correct" or not, who's to say. Because if you
call again, you'll likely get a different answer.

No, but you should be able to switch the secondary line to
an individual plan.

Not just *should be able* but *must switch* to an individual plan. How
exactly would Verizon force you to switch plans? Here you have a contract
that says the secondary line is on a family plan until some end date and
their going to force you to cancel that contract and change to an entirely
different plan? Even if that scenario were possible, you'd have to sign a
new contract because you are changing plans altogether, not just changing
the price point (number of minutes) within a plan. So, in effect you would
be extending the contract on the secondary line anyway...for an even later
end date than if it had been extended when the phone was upgraded in the
first place.
It's starting to make sense to me why family plan lines all have the same
end date. The only scenario that works is if the secondary lines have end
dates that are *before* the end date of the primary. I suppose this could
happen if the primary line extends the contract by upgrading the phone
without having to change plans. I've never been in that situation since
when I don't change plans often, so by the time I get to upgrade at
subsidized price the plan I'm on doesn't exist anymore. But I still
question if that's even possible in my market: it's always been new phone,
subsidized price, new signed contract.
