How bad is Hynix DDR for a 9800pro?

(sigh)...I ordered a Saphire 9800 pro from NewEgg expecting to get one with Samsung RAM and I just opened it up...Hynix. What gives? I thought Saphire made all their cards with Samsung. So how bad is Hynix? I've heard it's not as bad as the Infineon. How close does it rate to the Samsung? What kind of overclocking can I expect?

Hynix will run at its rated frequency no problem, that's something Infineon cannot do, while Samsung will run far beyond its rated frequency. If your Hynix ram's 2.8ns, then expect it to go about 355-360, probably not much more, Infineon on the other hand the 3.0ns has trouble running at 330mhz.

nowhere on my card does it say "saphire." Did I get ripped off? How do I know it's a saphire?

I agree with that any Samsung ram loves voltage, I had some PC2700 Samsung ram, from rated 166, went up to 234 absolutely stable at 3.1Vdimm, i admit it died in about 4 months, but it was a worthy 4 months. Surprisingly it liked to run at the timings of 2.5-3-3-6 than any other timings.

Ok, so what are my options? Should I just accept the fact that I won't be able to overclock, or should I find a way to get a card with Samsung DDR? I just bought a VGA silencer off of ebay and I want to make the most of both!

I was also pissed to get Hynix on my Sapphire 9800P but now I run it stable at 385, and that's after I had very little problems at 390, I just decided to not take any risks.

I don't know if it's considered hot because I have to way of measuring it, but I can just barely put my finger on the memory chips, any hotter and I wouldn't be able to hold my finger to them for more than a few seconds, that's just a bit cooler than the stock heatsink at 415 MHZ core.

well, at least I'm not alone in the world of Hynix cards. I think my buddy got a Radeon 9800pro with his new Dell system and I'm almost positive he's got Samsung DDR. I know he's not into the OC thing so you guys think I should trade him? There's no difference between Hynix and Samsung at stock speeds, right? Here's another thing: What would I be better off with, a 350 core with Samsung DDR or a 360 core with Hynix?

I wanted to flash my BIOS to the 9800XT but it is impossible to get a BIOS for Hynix RAM. I dunno if it would be able to take the speeds anyway. I will try and benchmark my system tonight and will give you the results..I think you beat me in aquamark though...damn u

"little" Athlon 64? Now that's an understatement. That, and your vid card's overclocked, right? You do have a sweet little system there scotty. And Jammy, yeah, 865PE chipset with Asus's PAT workaround enabled. Ya know, I was gonna do the RAID thing but decided against it. You may be disappionted, but you beat my ass. What about 3DMark scores? 01 & 03? What's wierd is, when I had just 512MB of that Geil DDR, my PCMark2002 Mem scores were around 9500. Then I put the full 1GB kit in and almost get an extra 1000 points. Maybe my 512 kit was kinda crappy...

Hey Jammy, wanna see how far our cards will go? Hey scotty, how can manufacturers tell if you've overclocked your video card? I'm sure you've gone through your share. Did you overclock and kill any, and still get the warranty RMA replacement?

Well I haven't dealt with manufactures much, my 9800pro went very well with ATI, and other 9800pro went very well with Gigabyte. Both were overclocked the sh*t out of. Both got killed, but ATI, Gigabyte didn't seem to care at all. Now i deal with distributor which makes my job hella lotsa easier, they don't care at all, they just send me a new one, and i just have to send them my old one within like a month.

I don't think Sapphire does warranty directly, I think you have to go through newegg, I'm personally not sure with OEM products. And don't use Sapphire's tech support phone, they charge like 3 dollars per minute.

I'm actually curious of the same thing. I just put on a VGA silencer on mine right now and was curious about the shim myself. The instructions don't mention anything about it so I left it on. So should it be taken off? I've gone to a couple sites that do the installation walk-through and they don't mention removing the shim either. I'm pretty sure mines made good contact with the shim on, AND it protects the core from getting cracked.

UPDATE2: WTF!! I overclocked my GPU to 410 and got snow in the water on Nature. Had to back it down to 400. I have the VGA silencer. Shouldn't I at least get to 430 or something? Anyway, I have my DDR up to 355(710) and everything seems OK there. Didn't want to push it until I get ramsinks....if they're even worth it at this point. My GPU pisses me off...

Well, no they run at different voltages, so... If I were you i wouldn't overclock that memory after some serious burn-in, you kill the ram very very quickly if you start off overclocking the crap out of it without burning it at its rated speeds. You could try raising the VAGP a little, see if it helps.

At 400core and 365RAM Im getting about 45,000 in aquamark and about 6100 in 3D mark...not bad.

Ok, the 4-pin power plug that you plug into the card - is it OK to have other things on that line or should the video card be the only thing on it? Also, what you said about the default VGPU - is that a mobo issue or a video card issue? If I check and double-check all possibilities of bad cooling and it turns out I have a crap chip, is that enough to RMA and get a new one? What would be my best option at that point?
