In the Asus PC Probe program, in the Information tab, in DMI Explorer, under the Processor section it has the following information:

Socket Designation: Socket A
Type: Central Processor
Family: Other
Manufacturer: AuthenticAMD
ID: 000006A0 0383FBFF
Version: AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2500+
Supported Voltage: 1.6V
External Clock: 133MHz
Max Speed: 2250MHz
Current Speed: 1800MHz
Status: Socket Populated; Enabled
Processor Upgrade: Other

What I dont understand is why it says that the Max Speed is 2250MHz. Does this mean that my processor can be overclocked to that speed or what?

LoL i have a 2500+ too and my asus probe says max 3000mhz.

btw why the hell is your external clock 133MHz ??? it suppose to be 166 x 11

HE HE HE!!!! You have an underclocked 2500+

Can you tell us your MB and RAM model? We will help you getting the most of your PC... And Max Speed is not an INPORTANT number, this number means nothing.

2500+ CPU's using the barton core are supposed to run at 1.83Ghz...so how is his CPU underclocked?

The one thing that does confuse me is the 133Mhz FSB but he could be using the mobile barton which I think uses a 133Mhz FSB.

Ouch!! What a dumb mistake I made here... I mostly noticed 133MHz FSB.

I have a regular 2500+, not mobile. I underclocked the FSB because I only have PC2100 memory, but I have the multiplier at 14x.

I have an Asus A7V8X (NOT A7N8X) which is a VIA KT400 motherboard. I know Ineed to buy PC2700 memory so I can run with two memory sticks and the FSB at 166Mhz. Too bad that increasing the front side buss also increases the PCI and AGP bus speeds :(.

Look, seriously, im asking for an honest opinion of how I can optimize my system with the parts that I have already and by purchasing PC2700 Ram. I don't need your rude comments.

It sounds to me that you are an nVidia fan more than anything. I have no problem getting nVidia products. In fact, I built my sister's computer with a motherboard based on the nVidia nForce 2 chipset. I have a VIA chipset and thats what I'm happy with at the moment. If you dont like me wanting to make my VIA chipset motherboard faster, then perhaps you would like to donate a motherboard that has an nVidia chipset? I dont have money to spare on a new motherboard.

Thanks for the info. I think ill get the Corsair XMS memory. I might have overreacted when I read your posts, I apologize. :)

Wouldnt getting a new motherboard be cheaper than getting a 512Mb stick of RAM?

Yes it would be, but if I buy a new motherboard, I will need to get faster memory for it. Right now I only have to spend money on the memory for my current motherboard.

Save your money for PC3200 or better and just wire mod your cpu to run at a 17x multiplier... 133x17=2261... 1.775 VCore ought to do it... you will need good cooling... SLK900A will do fine... getting pc2700 would just be a waste... get a better board first...

PC2700 and PC3200 are the same price anyway so what would be the point? He would end up spending a load on a cooler that he doesnt need.

He will need a quality heatsink anyway... and he would notice the difference from ~1800 to ~2200...

pc2700 being the same as pc3200... exactly...

the best bet would be getting heatsink and ram, but if he just gets ram, he cannot get to 2200+...

Anyway, if I only had $50 to put into his system, I would get the SLK900A and overclock to 133x17...

This heatsink can be used in his next board... and it will get hotter everywhere as summer comes on...

I think I used four 5mm long wires in my cpu socket to change the default multiplier to 17... 16.5x works too, if the cpu cannot handle the 17x...

my board only supported 14x, so I had to use the mod...

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I think I will get PC3200+ memory. Once I get the new memory, I will increase the FSB to 166. I dont know if I can increase the FSB more than that because it will also increase the AGP and PCI bus speeds.

I currently have a Volcano 11 Xaser Edition HSF. How does that one compare to the ones you mentioned?

I made a post a while back when I tried to overclock my processor. I was able to overclock it by changing the multiplier and keeping the FSB at 133. I had problems reaching Athlon XP3200+ Speeds. Anyone know why? Is my CPU just bad? Does the fact that I was able to increase my multiplier mean that my CPU is unlocked, or could it be that my motherboard unlocks any processor?

You can see the post here:

3200 speeds on kt400 are out of the question without voltmodding the NB and putting better cooling on it. Otherwise about 180 is as high that mobo will give you. Go NForce2 all the way for good FSB levels.

I am running 175FSB on my Asus A7V8X-X at the moment. NAy higher and I get memory errors (Crucial PC2700 is holding me back).

Just luck of the draw I guess. I do have two sticks of different ages (and densities) so the mix could be the problem. Im also running it at 2-2-2-6, and I dont particularly want to change that.
