Do you stay overclocked for gaming.

Or do you only OC when Benching. Am I going to see a huge diffrence in Gaming with my 3 ->3.5 overclock? Same goes for OC'ing the Video Card

I stay overclocked all the time!

If I didn't actually USE that extra performance, what would be the point?

I have my benchmark speeds, and I have my 24/7 speeds.
My athlon64 3200+, stock at 2.0Ghz, i run it 24/7 at 2.3Ghz, and I run it at 2.42Ghz during benchmarks. My video card, FX5900 with 5950U bios, defaults at 400/850, i run at 530/975 24/7, and run at 570/1000 during benchmarks.

For me the only purpose of overclocking is FOR gaming. I sure don't need to overclock for websurfing.

Do you stay overclocked for gaming.
The main reason to overclock is gaming!

My system is OC 24/7. I don't want to mess with overclocking every time I play a game. And note that most modern GPU lower their voltage in 2D operation (Windows). So, I don't see any overheat problem with GPU with 24/7 overclock.

And for the CPU, I don't care much since most CPU will rarly die to "normal" overclocking. And if it dies, this gives a good reason to upgrade!!!

And why to overclock for benchmark only? The only way to benefit from overclocking is to use the extra power in games/apps.

How do you define "normal" overclock? Like my first 2.6C which died due to 2.6-3.6 on air? Or is the 3200+, which defaults at 2.0ghz overclocked to 2.3ghz normal?

I call "normal" overclocking the one that don't need too much Voltage on core and are not extreme speed boost.

Going from 2.0GHz to 2.3GHz is only a 15% speed increase. But going from 2.6GHz to 3.6GHz is a huge 40% core speed increase.

I will say "reasonable overclocking" in the future to please you.

LOL actually the 2.0-2.3 probably gave me a bigger performance boost in games than 2.6-3.6

I just woke up, and realized that this is one of the most retarded posts ever!

True overclocking gives you bragging rights, but we're not that pathetic, we overclock so we can get the extra frames in games! So why would we not overclock during games?!

If you want a load overclock only, get an MSI board with DOT. You overclock to your maximum, set it as default in Core-Cell, and re-start. Now you run a normal FSB at idle or simple surfing, but when under load, CoreCell overclocks the FSB for you. Sounds great, doesn't it? I guarantee it will drive you out of your skull! It makes my rig sound like a vacuum cleaner as it spools the fans up under load. Looked great on the drawing board though!

My Home system (In my sig) stays at it's overclocked settings all the time. But then I've got a CPU that needs a comparatively low Vcore to run at 2.2Ghz, so I'm lucky

When I had a Tbird I used to use SoftFSB to do some overclocking on the fly. My system was/is always overclocked but it didn't need to run it at max overclock all the time, only during gaming.

The Tbred seems to be much more stable so I don't bother switching FSB any longer.

By the way, I don't like thermally controlled fans (if that's what you are talking about). When the fans change speed the sound changes too. That's anoying. To me it would be more annoying than steadily noisy fans.

at first i did it for benching only, but now i will keep it OCed all the time. i got a 1 year warranty through the dealer and i hope the CPU dies. anyway, i don't plan on running at these speeds over 1 year.

also if i were to OC any time, it would be when i'm playing games or doing other cpu intensive tasks.

Overclocking for benchmarking purpose.... very pointless activity.I rank that thing in the "My father is stronger than yours" category.

P.S. BTW my father is really stronger than yours...trust me.

LMAO

I stay OC'd in the Winter when my ambient temps are very low, back it down in the Summer. Hopefully the Mobile 2600+ I just ordered will run a little cooler, so can I stay OC'd in the Summer now.

I only OC for improved gaming, That's all this rig is for.

Unfortunately the mobiles wont run lower than desktop chips but however the mobile chips can put up with lot more heat than the desktops. If you are getting lower heat then probably you are using lower voltage which the mobiles will provide. A 2.4ghz mobile chip runs about the same temp as a 2.4ghz desktop chip. This has been my experience.

I never knew what thermal throttling does
I don't remember exactly what it does, but I think it's when the computer goes to Standby, or suspend S1 state, cpu speed (or cpu power consumption?) will be cut according the value that has been set. say 50%, then cpu speed will be reduced to the half speed while pc is suspended..
so i don't think thermal throttling will give you lower FPS as long as your pc is running "normaly"
