Here is my delima. I have an athlon 2100+ palamino, and a ga-7vrxp (kt333) motherboard. I have a gf4ti4600 and 2x512mb pc3000 ram corsair, i have it runing stable at 2-2-2-5.
Its slow when playing games like farcry. I'm not looking to buy a new computer, as I plan on doing that in about a year. What i'm looking to do is ideally upgrade my processor. My original plan was to stick a xp3000+ (333) in the board, but that didnt work. The motherboard actually doesnt officially support any 333mhz processors (seems a bit ironic to me).
Here is the list of what it does support
http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/CPUSupportList/CPUSupportList_GA-7VRXP (Rev 2.0).htm
But of course that list is a bit old, and i doubt its updated that often since its an older mobo.
So here is my question. What can I do to squeze some performance out of this setup? I could just buy a 2600xp but I don't think I would notice a big a difference for it to be worth my time.
What I would really like to do would be to get a cheap processor and overclock it. The problem is I dont know if my motherboards limitation is that it wont support 166(333)mhz cpus, or if it just flat out doesnt support any cpu above model number 2600xp+, regardless of fsb speed.
What is my best choice here?
1. buy 133(266) 2600+, will this be a noticable difference for me?
2. buy mobile 2500+. what fsb does this run at, and would it work in my mobo. I see tons of people overclocking these to 3200+ Are they doing this by changing multiplier (i dont think i can change multiplier on my mobo past 12.5). Or are they doing this with fsb (I dont know if i can run any proccessor at 166(333)?
3. buy new mobo (nforce2 i guess) and new processor. My budget is <=$200. I am not willing to buy new ram. Could i run a nfroce2 w/2500+ mobile @ 3200+, using my existing pc3000 ram?
4. does anyone know for sure if a ga-7vrxp rev2.0 can run a 166(333) processor, or if it flat out wont run any processor past 2600+ raiting, regardless of fsb speed?
