OK, this will be for OCing.

Had a bit of bad luck with desktop Barton, not a very good OCer. Plus when I ordered they were unlocked, by the time it arrived- Whoopi I got one of the first locked chips

Searched here for info on preferred steppings, could'nt find anything. Are there any preferred steppings? I read pcexcalible.com (or something similar) guarantees steppings.

2400/2500/2600 Which way to go?

Thanks

Ask forums of extremeoverclocking.com, or overclockers.com, they got insane overclocking freaks there, they'll help you out better than we could.

My 2600 kind of sucks... at least Prime95 says so... Seems stable at 215 and close to 2600MHz, but Prime95 craps out...

I still need to take out my board and replace that north bridge fan... I did that for a friend on his NF7-S, and it was a very crappy thurmal paste job...

buy an AXPm 2600+. i went through two 2500+ AXPm and bought two 2600+ to see which would be better. i sold both 2500+ and sold one of the 2600+. they both OCed about the same. before that i had some 1700+ OCed, those were good chips.

depends. on a 400 FSB barton with 512kb l2 cache, its 2766 with 67 being the divider. 2766/67=41.28

anyway, thats the divider they use for the other 400FSB AXPs. actually its 66.

this doesn't exist tho... so i'm still not 0 sure. i got the divider from searching google.

those are different too. from the research i did, this holds true for athlon xp. i don't know about athlon 64... didn't really do research on a chip i don't have.

I asked myself the same question not long ago and I even asked some editors (via email) to write an article about this issue. No one have done it yet.

I think Mobile Barton 2500+ got a lot of attention because it was available in volume or was the frist mobiie Barton on the market (but I'm not sure). I personnaly think that the Mobile 2400+ should overclock very well too. And it's quite a bargain a 77$US. The 2500+ is 90$ and the 2600+ is 2600+.

Theorically the 2600+ is the "creme de la creme" Barton and should be the one processor the get for EXTREME overclocking. But for moderate overclocking the Mobile 2400+ should be very good. And it's more than 20% cheaper. If money is no object, I would recommend Mobile 2600+, but if you want to keep 22$ in your wallet and maybe loose 100MHz in overclocking, the Mobile 2400+ is the way to go.

I really think the Mobile 2500+ is the one to avoid, because it's just 9$ cheaper than the 2600+ and most people who buy Mobile Barton will not actually care about this 9$ price difference.

Sorry to hear your 2600+ is crappy. Might wanna try the older version of P95 if ur not already, I still read of peeps upset with OC cuz it's failing the newer version. They then try the older version and everything passes with flying colors. They report they were always stable in games and such (which I think is the real test). So I'm leary of the new version.

Yeah, the Northbridge thermal paste job was very half-@ssed on my board. I don't think much of the HS either, it had a "lumpy" looking surface. Overall, I didn't get the impression it could be made to have good contact. I applied a fairly thick coat of AS5 and let it go at that.

Got a old Celery 400 laying around, may try to use it's HS on the NB one day. Then move the stock NB HS+f over to the SB.

When I swap my SLK900A for an SP97, I will also put a Crystal Orb on my north bridge (which has started to make noise)... that is when I will resume my overclocking efforts... I think I was passing 3DMark in several passes at 215x12=2580 but failing Prime95 in minutes... so I guess the chip is not crappy... but I did have the idea in my head of a min fsb overclock of 215 when I rebuilt my system... so I will continue toward that goal soon...

Over at OCUK the Barton 2500 seems to be the most popular O/Cer. I have mine at 2.5 GHZ 217x11.5 on air. It's my NF7 thats holding me back i think. Some NF7's wont go past 217. Once I get some better cooling I'll attempt 12x217.

I have seen a few threads of people struggling to get past 217-219 fsb. Maybe we are all doing something wrong :)

I am using a Coolermaster Xdream at full pelt until I get my watercooling set up. (parts were lost in post.

The case temps might actually be a bit lower than what the abit EQ tells me. My case temps are just above ambient according to my Lian Li temp sensor.

Yeh v vcore 1.82 to 1.84

215x12=2580 with air cooling is not to laugh at. ESPECIALLY if you are in hot enviroment like me. Lets all just thank AMD for allowing these mobile chips to take in more heat.

Mobile 2600 have given me the highest clocks (more multipliers) but the mobile 2500 have been more stable with me when I break the 200 barrier. I just got a mobile 2600 to smack just past 3ghz with 225x13.5 but the vcore I put it at is pretty damn high and get random lockups past 3hrs of usage. Bet it has something to do with the nforce2 limitations. On the other hand, all the mobile 2500 rigs Ive built all max out 220*13 with vcore at 2 and they are ROCK STABLE with air cooling. Will that 200mhz make a differnce? I think not unless you are into pcmark bragging.

The NF7 boards seem to max out at about 230fsb, apart from mine :( , but the DFI boards can get up to 250fsb. But the Nf7's seem to be more reliable with alot of RMA's for DFI. Saying that i am on my second NF7!
