Heatsink on a Ati 9800pro 360 core

I notice that the Stock Heatsink is not entirely flat at the bottom in fact its sticks out a little in the middle at the bottom of the H/S... I am guessing thats for better heat conductivity (so it looks like Ati is making sure ther heatsink makes optimal conatact with the core).

So my question is would it matter if i used a heatsink that was entirely flat act the bottom. What i am afraid of is that an after market heatsink may not make contact with the core properly.

Sorry if i seem like a dip-sh!t but i am kinda new at this stuff, What & wher is this shim you are referring to? and how do i remove it?

The shim is the protective metal thing around the VPU. Just got a knife and chip it off. actually freeze the card first(put it in an anti-static bag, then into the freezer) for about 20min, it'll make it easier.
