Ok I know I am probably going to get flamed for being a wise a** but... hey that never stopped me before.

Why do people buy a chip that is (lets say for the sake of argument) $40 cheaper and then spend $30-$200+ getting a cooling solution to overclock it to the speed of the chip that was $40 more?
Is it just like climbing the mountain..(cause it is there?)

*ducks*
peace

We're peaceful in the overclocking session, it's easier to start a flamewar in CPU or Graphics Card Section, one of those good old classic AMD vs Intel or ATI vs Nvidia flammies.

To answer your quesiton, which i've asked myself many times, is because it's FUN:D And because we have no lives, the final reason is because overclocking is still cheaper, buying a Athlon64 3200+ with a Venus 12 is about 150 dollars cheaper than the Athlon64 3400+ but it can reach 2.4Ghz, which the Athlon64 3400+ could also do with stock.

I bought a P4 2.6C and overclocked it to 3.2GHz on the stock cooler. Why would I want to pay $40 more? Or in this case, $200 more (the price difference at the time of purchase)?

Ok, well both of those replies sound reasonable. I was looking at that athlon 64 3200+. I checked the msi site for the new k8n neo platinum board and it says athlon 3400+ and up. Tom's used it for the intitial nvidia 3 250gb chipset test with athlon 64 3200+ so apparently it worked, at least for them. Of note though msi seems to have given them a custom bios for both that test and the recent one about memory compatibility. How can I be sure it is compatible if the msi site doesn't list it?
I am sooo confused. As obtuse as all the information is it is a wonder all these mega companies sell anything. Is pc 3200 memory the best way to go with the 3200+ or should I go higher and try my hand at ocing it? I am looking at corsair. What do you guys recommend?

Screw MSI, they're f*cking retarded, that motherboard supports all socket754 CPUs, INCLUDING 2800+, and the mobile 2700+, and everything up.

As for overclocking I'd go for some PC3700 with nice CL rating like the OCZ ones, you can probably get them to run at 240 at 2-3-3-10 with the 2.85V

Dear Customer,

The K8N Neo Platinum will support the Athlon 64 3200+ and you should have no problem using the Corsair TWINX 1GB memory kit. The K8N Neo Platinum has begun shipping to vendors.
