2500+ to 3200+ causing voltage spikes?

Heya...

I'm overclocking a buddies computer. He's got an Athlon 2500+, Asus A7N8X motherboard with 512 PC 2700.

I've got the chip running @ 3200+ (11 x 200) with memory also at 200 MHz. I turned the CPU voltage up slightly to 7.5 volts and the DDR voltage up a bit also to 1.6V.

The system runs fine, except when I run prime95 torture test, with the Asus Probe utility running, I am getting a warning on my 12V power line. It's up at 13.2. There's a nice red line and some flashing going on to get my attention. When I stop the torture test, the 12V goes back down to 12.5V ish, and the warning goes away.

Does this noramlly happen when stressing your system? Does your voltage go all nuts? Or is it just the Asus Probe utility that is giving flase readings? Any info would be appreciate as I don't want to give him back his system in a state that could generate a warning or worse - a hardware failure. Thanks

All things must surely have to end...

LOL you mean Vcore to 1.75V, and VDimm to 2.6V? Because if you have your Vcore at 7.5, i have to give you the badge of stupidity.

What power supply do you have? It's very likely that your power supply isn't holding, and not the motherboard's problem.

I didn't know overclocking was hard on the power supply too.

Overclocking is very harsh on overclocking, i've blown 3 power supplies due to overclocking. There's a risk of it killing everything it's attached as well:D so make sure you buy a decent branded power supply, and at least 350watt. FSP/Sparkle 350watt is very cheap can be found at about 40-50CAD dollars.

I've never blown a power supply due to overclocking, I guess I must use better parts than you!

I use a cheap PSU! Of top quality design!

I was in a hurry once to get an ATX12v power supply to test a system. I ran to the local shop and bought a $50 case and power supply. I resold the case for $35! But after I was done with the power supply...what to do?

I decided to use it. After a couple months it blow a couple capacitors. When I opened it up, I noticed that unlike most cheap power supplies, this one had a GREAT design. It used additional parts cheap supplies don't normally have, like inductive coils in the filter circuits! And the PCB was laid out for oversized capacitors, but cheap undersized parts were used.

As parts continued to fail, I replaced them. After around a year all that was left were the good parts and the new parts, but then the HOUSING failed, the screws pulled through the threads. So I put on a heavy duty housing. Now I have a GREAT power supply on the cheap, for a LOT of labor! w00t.

I'm poor. You hear me brag about Fortron Source power supplies but I've never owned one for long, because I've always sold every one I got. But my customers are loyal, I've never had one fail in their systems.

It's how a guy earning 50% less than the poverty line maintains a middle class lifestyle, you do everything youself so you don't have to spend money. I'm actually an automotive mechanic.
