i was thinking about upgrading my processor, im doing a lot of other things to my computer so i figured why not.

but now i've got a choice of three xp-m's. the 35 watt 2400, 45 watt 2500, or the 45 watt 2600. wich one has more headroom for overclocking? cost is no matter as they're all about the same price(88,89,95).

im looking for the highest overclock on air cooling.

2600+ is probably the best choice.

since there really is no substantial increase in clock rates..i think ill hold out to get a whole new mobo and chip deal.

thanks for the input.

Just curious, is a mobile chip physically different from a standard chip? As I understand it the mobile chips can be overclocked but the standard one's can't (without modifications). So what's to keep me from upgrading to a mobile and ocing?

Just a thought.

A7n8x dlx 1004 Uber Agressive settings
2500Barton (Bastards locked it) Radeon 9200
WD 60g @7200w 8mg Cache Crucial 2700 2x 256
AMD ME??? Yeah they did me alright.

lol, the standard ones can be o/c! My barton 2500 is at 3200 speeds right now.
Since mobile chips are designed to go in laptops (where battery life is important) AMD picks the 'cream of the crop' and labels them as Mobile chips. This means they can do the same speeds as regular chis but with less voltage. Additionally, the multiper is Unlocked on mobiles (where as since week 43 of 2003 all regular chips have their mulitper locked)

With an unlocked multipler, and low power consuption these are an o/c dream

I will add to the previosu past, that the mobile chip are unlocked to be able to underclock automatically when less CPU power is needed.

So a mobile Barton 2600+ at full speed will only use 45Watts of power and this power requirement goes down when the CPU is at idle, the PC automatically reduce CPU speed (multiplier) and voltage.

But from what I see on your signature, you better buy a faster GPU than a faster CPU unless you are only doing CPU intensive stuff!

It's tricky to use words like AMD or Intel in a signature some users could think your are biased.

Those two will do about the same thing. Id be more concerned with just how high you want it to go and start considering cooling solutions.

so what is the difference between the 35watt and 45watt versions? Is one better for overclocking purposes? Thx.

well idealy t he 35watt will overclock the best...but because it starts out lower than the 45watt 2600 the difference is nelgiable.

Supposedly the 45 watt one can take more heat but the one that I run into end up doing the same thing.

Damn skippy it is. I have to do 1.8 with 2.5ghz and Can do up to 3ghz with 2 volts but it fails the prime after 2 days but never got a crash from the games. Just dont ask what cooling solution I have to use at 2.5ghz and up.
