Hmm, well the 1st 2 to pop into my head are Torchlight and Sacred. But I'd also say check out XCOM: Enemy Unknown and see if that fits your strategy itch. If you like the themes and clickyness of Diablo in a very RPG game then I would HIGHLY recommend The Witcher 1 and 2.
Diablo 3 is an Action RPG, that felt like a mix of WoW and Diablo 2. Diablo 1 (by far my favorite) was more of a Survival-Horror RPG clickfest.
I did enjoy final fantacy 7 on the ps2. Back then you still could choose where to go. You didnt HAVE to go that direction or do this quest. You could skip a quest if you wanted to or didnt find it, just like with diablo 1.
http://www.pathofexile.com/ is (imo) a hell of a lot better than what Diabolocks 3 turned out to be. The added bonus is that the game is free, only supported by cosmetic purchases and not pay to win as in many cases.
It's currently in open beta right now and plays very well indeed. Dont worry about the size of the skill point tree, just takes a little getting used to.
