I recently asked about treo 650 with out data plans and got some useful
answers!

Thank you all.

There was a second question in my posting, which has not been
addressed, so I'm posting it separately here.

I plan to move my 91 year old mother from her own individual $39.95
plan into my family plan. She doesn't use more than about 50
min./month. She's currently using an old Samsung SCH N150 and doesn't
want to change phones (it's hard for even sweet old dogs to learn new
tricks), but she is
eligible for an upgrade, an eligibility that will end when she goes
onto my family plan. I was thinking of upgrading her to the Treo 650,
moving her onto my family plan, and then activating the 650 with my
number. Is that permitted? If I can do this, do I have to do it in a
sneaky sort of way, or is it totally permissible?

Thanks.

Once you upgrade her to the Treo and then put her on the family plan, you
should be able to go to the Verizon service desk and have them switch your
number to the Treo and her number to your old phone. I just switched
numbers on two of my phones on my family plan.

It's completely permissible. If you take an upgrade the
phone is yours to do with as you please. You could
put it on eBay without opening the box if you wanted.

VZW recovers the subsidy cost through service commitments,
either past or future. That's why their phones are not
locked. The upgrade will be marked against Mom's line
and that line won't be eligible for an upgrade for whatever
period (1 year, 2 years?). So you could get the upgrade
price on the Treo, activate it on your line and then get
another upgrade whenever your line is eligible.
