only just started gaming on a pc built for work but surplus to needs, have basic knowledge of how to oc and wondered if any good for playing skyrim/assasins creed, bf3 kind of games, not got lots to spend so subtle would be good or better to sell and buy complete new ?

That's a pretty solid rig. Although with a PC like that I wonder how can you have a tight budget.
Anyways , why don't you buy the new DmC game? It's pretty fun or save up and buy Bioshock infinite in march. 3RD person adventure games more your style? Then pre-order the new tomb raider. Mass effect 3 is also not bad for a TPS but for an RPG experience buy the previous two mass effects. Far cry 3 ain't that far fetched for your style either.

That's a mid-range system, pretty solid.

You should be able to run newer games at medium settings, the less demanding ones at high.

thanks guys, just wondered the weak points for playing on panasonic 1920 x 1080. can spend around £150 if need to, new to games so taking the rpg route to get used to
