I have a Leadtek FX5900 Ultra 256 that runs fine at 475/950 so am going to fash it to 5950 Ultra.

Now my fans on the heatsink are a bit on the loud side cos there about to die so am going to install the TT Extreen Giant 3 on the card, but will I need to cool the BGA RAM?

When i took apart the standard heatsink the ram was attached to the heat sink on the rear with thermal pads about 2mm thick so i cant see that being a big help.

So it is worth paying the extra $$ to get bga ramsinks or will they be ok with out them??
Thanks,

I've never put them on an Nvidia card before, but my 9800 pro/XT benifited from them (OCZ copper BGA ramsinks). They added 10 Mhz to the max, stable overclock of the RAM. Plus they made the card look cooler. So if aesthetics and 10Mhz is worth $15-$20, then I'd say go for it.

Oh hell yeah. Just redo the WHOLE cooling system on that right with something that SHOULD have been on there.

Especially for that card, PLEASE put some ramsinks on it but they take alot of juice and even at stock you can fry bacon on them. Can do copper as long as you have good irrigation and the HSF does not hover over the sink but if not then go for alluminum.

Did you get that Giant yet? I'd get the NV4 VGA Silencer. Check it out (pretty sure that's the right one) and it has ramsinks built into the copper base.

Yeah I got it, installed it with no ram sinks and the ram runs very nicely at 475 / 950 and its no too hot to touch. I am witing on some ram sinks that i will install.

With the Silencer i will still need to get ramsinks for the back side of the card.

Do ram sinks make a difference, I never had much success with them, and did not gain any increase in clock speed with them on my G-Card

I highly recommend the Zalman ZM-HP80D with an accompanying fan of your choice (anything from their silent, low CFM fan to a 120mm or 92mm beast--I currently have a 107CFM 120mm YS-Tech mounted on mine). It comes with RAMsinks and cools VERY well (my 9800XT at stock idled at 48C and soared up to 64C under load...now my temps are 33C and 41C, and my high OC is higher w/o any volt modding, too). Anyway, it's a GREAT cooler! It is a slight pain to install (~45min for me, an HP80C owner on my Ti4400, first timers have said to take 2hrs), but well worth it, IMO.

Anyway, sounds like noise is a biggish issue for you, my might want to try TT's new silent cat fan on the HP80D for a lot cooling (52CFM on a cooler that can work without a fan) with only a tad of noise (21dB). Anyway, I'm very impressed with the cooler if you can't tell.

Maxtor disgraces the six letters that make Matrox.
