Dissappointed in BFG oc

Bought a BFG 6800gt "overclocked" card today.

It runs VERY hot it seems under normal load with normal clocks.

First of all, I cant get coolbits to overclock it for 2 reasons. Any REAL overclock the coolbits "test" wont accept, and the small overclock I can do doesnt stay once I leave, even though I apply it.

either way the heatsink feels to hot to overclock as it is.

this blows.

Don't be so quick to say it won't oc. First of all, all of the GT's run at the same temps unless the board maker puts on a different heatsink than what is manufacturer reccommended. Second of all, they run hot, that is just the way the NV40 arcitecture runs, normal it around 50~55c idle and 70~80c when in a game. Next the only reason coolbits wouldn't stay is a software issue, try uninstalling your driver, then reinstalling it, also see if there is another place you can dl coolbits from, maybe the file was partly corrupted.
Third remember than you paid for a 6800 GT that runs at 370 mhz and 1ghz mem, not any higher, so any oc is for free and it is luck of the draw. My card won't OC past 380ish GPU and 1.05ish mem without artifacts in doom 3, my 2.6c P4 won't OC past 3.133GHz, but other ppl can get 3.4, 3.2 etc... Hope this helps. I don't think that it would be noticeable in the first place, the 6800's and X800's are so freakin fast that you can't tell, once your past 60 fps, it doesn't matter.

I wouldn't say that the GT idles at 50c - 55c, unless it has a good cooling solution. The reference cooler sure doesn't do that good a job. Hell, my 6800nu idles at 58c - 62c (which is normal), and I have very good case cooling. my 2.6c is oc'd to 3.25Ghz and idles at 27c. my mobo idles at 29c.

No that is not true, my BFG 6800 GT OC is stock oced to 370 GPU and it is 53 C right now as I am typing this in. I have a stock cooler on it to. My cpu is idling at 47c, its a 2.6c @3 GHz. But I have older thermal paste on it, Arctic Silver 3, I haven't bought Arctic Silver 5 or an aftermarket cooler yet. It might be that your board reads temps different, the Abit boards read it directly off of the thermal sensor in the CPU. Yours might read your temps off of the Mobo CPU temp sensor, my Asus board does it that way in my other comp, it reads about 32C idle.

do you have the dual-fan BFG or the single fan one? I recently sold my 6800nu and now I have a dual-fan BFG GT. Although it looks nice, the temps sucked. That thing idled around 63c! shot up to 85c load! I now have an NV5 on it and it idles around 54c and 65c load. I'm happy with the load temps, but the idle temps should be lower.

I have BFG's single fan design(Nvidia reference with the heatpipe), it uses the turbine style fan, but its quiet, my IC7-Max3 chipset cooler is alot louder than my vid card, i can't even hear it above my normal case fans. Actually, since i dusted it, its now running at 50c as i am typing this up and its oced to 380/1.05.

Dude all Nvidia cards burn very hot. I do know that BFG's OCed cards are bois-tweaked so you may get issues using the clasic OC utilities.

Even that Nvidia stock HSFs arent really good enought and they all should be using water cooling solutions in my opinion.

So which BFG 6800 GT OC would you all recommend, the dual fan, or single fan.. I hope dual fan, cause that was the one I got.. "The box was the least smashed on Best Buy's shelf..." I haven't installed the card yet as I haven't ordered anything to put it in so far. ;)

What do yoy expect, its Nvidia. They burn hot at stock and those 6800 lines are already borderling the necesity of water cooling. Been using nothing but big-ass CPU hsf or vga silencers for hsf solutions on them and if I want to OC it descent then I put in the waterblock.

Really anything past stock is a freebee and should be thankful.

Sorry, but the single fan cools better. Too bad BFG doesn't make the GToc with it anymore :frown: .

I replaced my BFG 6800 GT OC stock HSF with the Arctic Cooler NV5...put thermal paste on the RAM and AC5 on the GPU. I idle at 51-52 and 59-60 under gaming load. I flashed the BIOS to the Gainward 6800 GT GS, detected optimal frequencies with Coolbits2 and I'm currently at 426 GPU and 1.17 RAM. Doom3 was running at 1280res, High settings, 8X AA, 8X AAF with 60+ FPS...no artifacts, no hang-ups or tearing...sahweet! I highly reccomend this BIOS if you have a BFG card...the forums I've read, people have had great results with the Gainward BIOS with BFG cards. I haven't even started bumping it up to check the max. Card runs cool with the NV5...even better under load.

Tony do you have 3dmark 03, 05 scores??? Im running a 4.19 / 1.17 clock and havnt had to do anything to my card. Ive gotten my card up to 4.25 / 1.19 before (havnt pushed it further) but the benefits of taking it up that much higher and the performance advantage didnt warrant running the card like that all the time (Diffrent drivers might have yielded better results).

No, I don't have 3D '03 or '05...I'm on dial-up right now for a month and those programs are to big to download. I've bumped up to 428/1.18 without a problem...I tried 430/1.2 but started to get freezes in Call of Duty United Offensive. I'm running 66.81 Forceware...I've read that people are getting the least problems with them.

Why did you use the Gainward BIOS? All you need to do is up the GPU volage with OmniExtremeEditFX.

Ok, they have nvflash 5.10 out now so should I use that instead? Also, there are 3 different GT bioses to download: The regular, the GS, and the GS.GLH. Which one is best and recommended?

The forums I was reading talked about the Gainward BIOS having great results in Ocing and stability on BFG cards. And it comes at 1.4v standard and you don't have to use any edit program...just flash and you're done. I used the Gainward 6800 GT GS (Golden Sample)...not sure what the GLH stands for. I used the nvflash 4.42 since I could find the instructions on the commands to flash easier than the current flash programs. Doesn't matter what you use as it gets the flash job done.

I tryed the BIOS, no good at all. I used the Gainward GT (GS) Rev.1 and the 4.42 utility. It worked, but the card actually ran slower in some parts of the game. I put back in the stock BIOS. OC results are the same with both BIOS's, all you need to do is up the vcore in the BFG bios, its really easy and only takes less than a minute with omniextremeeditfx v1.5. I highly reccommend it over useing the Gainward BIOS.
