Hi all.
Greetings!!
I need an opinion about computer hardware upgrade.
My current config:
P-3 550 MHz, Intel CA810E Desktop board, 128 MB SD RAM, two 5400 rpm HDD (Seagate 20 GB + Samsung 8 GB), NIC, ATX Cabinate, Floppy Drive, CD-Writer , CD ROM, Samsung 17" Monitor, Samsung keyboard, Logitech Mouse.

I am a student and would like to upgrade my above mentioned config.
What I think is just to change the 'inner' parts of Cabinate. viz. M/B, RAM, Processor.
HDD, NIC are just fine and no need to change Monitor, optical drives etc...

Now, I would like to have suggestion for a good budget oriented M/B, RAM, CPU combination.
I would develope applications in Java (java IDE are very processror and i/o hungry viz. NetBeans etc..), also I may install web/database servers like oracle, mysql, IDEs like VS.NET, J2EE sdk etc.. So, lots of I/O... (I don't know)
I am not fond of Gamings but would like to play ocassionaly. :)

So, Can any one suggest me a good combination, good price and performance balanced config...

I think this is the right place where experts from arounf the glob meets...

Intel or AMD??
Your opinion is most appriciated...

Thanks all,
Nirav

Budget CPU/mobo/ram.

Well may I suggest an AMD Barton 2500+ plus or so CPU. I'd get a mobile Barton 2400/2500/2600+ for about $100 (stepping IQYHA from excaliberpc.com)

Mobo - Shuttle an35n-ultra for about $60

Ram-Corsair Value Select pc 3200 about $80 for a 512MB stick IIRC

If you get the mobile cpu, it'll likely reach speeds of the more expensive (Barton) 3200+ at a much lower cost

BTW, a HD @ 7200 rpm will be a noticeable improvment over a 5400 rpm HD

Mobile XP 2600+ (11X200)
Abit NF7-S v 2.0
Maxtor 60GB ATA 133 7200RPM
512MB Corsair Twinx 3200LL
BBA 9800 Pro
Enermax Noisetaker 420 watts
