I have an old Athlon 1700 that I'd like to overclock but I don't know what mults or vcore I should use. I looked into this a while back and I'm pretty sure it is unlocked. Can anyone tell me the theoretical top speed for an unlocked (thorobred?)? I have a locked 2500 barton which I'm overclocking the fsb and I'm wondering if I could do better.
Specs are not available as the chip isn't being used right now (no cpuid). If I got the stepping would this help anyone with my question? Thanks

Not sure on the 1700, but what are you running on the barton? Voltages/FSB? What heatsink do you have?

Stepping info would help.

Tbred A should be good to about 2 Ghz.

Tbred B about 2.2 Ghz to 2.5+ Ghz on air cooling. The later B's were better than the early ones. The early ones need more Vcore.

My XP1700+ (JIUHB 0302) needs 2.15 volt to reach 2.25 Ghz but runs all day long at 2.1 Ghz and 1.8 volt using mid-range cooling.

Theoreticaly it can do up to 3ghz pending how much juice you can do and cooling.

That barton 2500 could do 400fsb fine and maybe more, just a matter of how good your cooling is and how much juice you can give it. Stepping on those locked bartons is really irrelevant for they all pretty much do the same.

Stepping is axda1700dl 73c AIUGA0245SPHW. the cpu is badged too. As far as the fsb and the voltage, I'll check what I have it set at later. I'm pretty sure I just bumped it up a little bit. I'll post back later with the details.

AIUGA0245SPHW? Well you've got a late model (week 45, 2002) Tbred A. Unfortunately it's not a "B". Should do about 1900 Mhz with air cooling, a little more if you get a bit radical with the HSF or go water cooling. 2.0 to 2.1 Ghz is about the upper limit but not many people reached that high.

Well bummer. I am doing a lot of video editing and I thought that might help me. I'm gonna load up on some ram though. Because of the short supply of athlons it seems like the price is actually going up. I'm totally priced out of the market.
