I have gone right back to the bones now, starting totally fresh, I
decided to try get the oysters before I had anything to worry about. I
have, with a lot of dying and aching hands managed to get 45 of these
things, seeing some strange stuff like underwater helicopters chasing
me up behind the dam but now I have the five oysters to collect on
mainland Las venturas and it seems I am going to get shot to bits
before I get anywhere near anything. Any hints without using any
cheats to spawn stuff?

You're going after them with that unshakable 4-star?

Good luck. That's all I have to offer.

(Aren't there some that simply REQUIRE the jetpack?)

How about parachuting into them?

Whew... er... dunno if it would help. The Horseshoes on the other hand
would almost definitely require more time and patience and, er,
invulnerability. I decided in the end to sod it and firstly got the
ambulance missions under my belt, to give me a bit of extra life. Then
I took the small plane from the airport and flew over, ditching it as
close as I could to the first oyster, though finding that one was so
awkward i died straight away. The next one I got the same way but
sometimes when you are being shot at in these circumstances your
character seems to freeze for a few seconds, enough for them to get a
few hundred shots off at you. A couple of attempts with the small
plane ended up with me getting blasted before I got near the
remainders, but i grabbed another before dying and decided to try once
more but with the small jet. I got almost right to the spot with no
hassle from fighters but every cop was after me and just about every
car seemed to want to run me down but I wiggled and jiggled and got
the second last, then saw this chick on a bike, slapped her off with
hardly any life left, raced to the last one (which was on a roof) and
grabbed the damned thing just before I got blown away...

and to paraphrase Homer Simpson... "Let us never speak of the oysters
again."

As i explained to Cleve I've managed it just by being gung ho, but I
don't seem to be able to find a chute, the plane hasn't given me one,
is this because I don't have a licence?

I could have if I had the patience As someone pointed out you can jump
the barriers at the airport and fly one of two planes, as long as you
don't fly over the closed islands you can gain flying time and a
pilot's license. This enables you to drive straight into the airport,
though when the second island opens it doesn't let you fly the big
helicopters etc, unless i just hadn't enough experience.

Instead this time I just used the two available planes for a kind of
head on attack.

There's a parachute available at the top of the tall sleek pyramid shaped
building in San Fierro, and there's also one available at the top of one of
the skyscrapers in Los Santos, but I'm not sure which one, but I'm pretty
sure you don't need a license or anything... you only need a license to
automatically get a parachute when you jump in a plane... So enter the
yellow arrow at the base of both of those skyscrapers.. for sure in the San
Fierro pyramid building, enter from the south, and almost as sure in the
center skyscraper in Los Santos... you'll arrive at the rooftop and there
should be a red parachute waiting for you... let me know how things work
out...

That's how I got a lot of my Venturas Horseshoes... parachuting into them...

Right. I'm thinking horseshoes. Yeah, I suppose it's possible to snag the
OYSTERS without a jetpack (but with major pain).

Well, a H.A.L.O. jump might prevent that... but it's a tricky thing....

Y'know what? I never bothered to check that. Does the jetpack disappear
if you attempt to dive or eject it in shallow water?

There was one occasion when I was collecting the horseshoes on top of
the fairy tale castle-type casino (Whilst also collecting oysters) where
I took off the jetpack to run faster across the roof-top - and
subsequently pressed the d-stick in the wrong direction and became
humourous pavement pizza. Doh!

On my first playthrough, you wouldn't believe how many oysters I found
by doing really recklessly cool-looking stunts off of cliffs and
bridges. The one in Glen Park in LS springs to mind, boy did my PCJ fly
when I hit that rock....

Cheers,
Rob

<slaps head>

I was thinking horseshoes.

But, since you ask...

Most oysters CAN be retrieved with the jetpack on. If you hover over the
right spot and then drop fast (square, isn't it?) you drop into the water
deep enough to get all but the deepest ones.

No, you can't take the pack off when you're in the water, but here's an
interesting trick. If you're in a boat and take off the jetpack, it appears
on the floor of the ocean directly below. If you can dive that deep without
running out of air, you can go get it (but I don't think it reappears on
your back until you get out on dry land (or back into the boat)).

Love that jetpack. Still my favorite toy, by a wide margin.

A H.A.L.O jump is a High Altitude, Low Open jump. You bail out of the plane
when you get as high as you can, then streak down as fast as you can and
open the chute as close to the ground as you can get without splatting...

:O) I've had a few of those moments. Worst was first time I got it.
Instead of doing the horseshoes I decided to save it in a nearby
safehouse then go find the horseshoes. Of course the damned thing
disappears!

Strange thing about the jet-pack is that you can't dump it by pressing
triangle in midair.
However if you spawn a Rhino, the pack disappears to the ground below and
you drop like a stone along with the tank.
If CJ survives the fall he'll try to get into the tank automatically.
Doesn't seem to work with any other vehicle.

I have found if you press the triangle to dump the pack and there's a
vehicle nearby CJ will go off on one, sometimes getting me in quite a
bit of trouble, by jumping a cop bike or something.
