I have the hercules 3dProphet 9800 pro with the r350 core and 2.5ns samsung. the max stable OC that I can seem to get is 393 core/360mem according to ATI Tools running for 3-4 hours. From what I've heard the hercules cards should be able to go to XT speeds, is there something I'm doing wrong? Do I need to try another kind of software? I've seen some people talk about changing the voltage, would this help and how would I do that? Thanks in advance for any help.

my rig:

AXP 2500 Barton @ (10.5*200 @ 1.8v)
PDP pc3200 DDR RAM (2-3-2-5)
3d Prophet 9800 pro

Are you sure you can't go any higher.

I think I have the same card as you (Green / Blue PBC?)

Anyway, mine does 435 core (any higher artifacs in Doom3) / and I can't remember the mem speeds.

Are you certain that's 2.5ns RAM? Because those speeds sound typical for their 2.8ns RAM.

I'm sure it's the 2.5ns. It's the blue PCB. Any ideas what would be causing such a low OC?

would increasing the AGP voltage help me get a higher OC on this card? If I should increase the voltage, what increments should I increase it by?

You are going to want beefier cooling on that gpu to go much higher. I have my sapphire 9800pro 256mb liquid cooled and I can run fine at 450gpu/768ram. I'm sure the ram could go higher but I haven't bothered to mess with it much, it runs to good :)
I don't think the agp voltage would help a vid card oc to much. I'd only touch it if you are upping the agp frequency.
Those things get HOT even when not overclocked. That stock cooler looks much better than the one that came with my sapphire but it still could use more.

Do you have any suggestions for a good cooler to put on this card?

Hard to say. I've always just find a heatsink and adapt it to work on what ever I need it for. If you want to play it safe I'm sure something like the zalman ZM80D-HP with a big fan strapped on it would do nicely :)
Other wise just get a big heatsink and find a way to bolt it to the video card :)

thanks for the suggestion folken. If I don't upgrade my card I might try that out. I will try your suggestion wusy for OC'ing the card. How many times you think I should loop the test? and is on of the test better than the others to run?

When I was ocing I would get artifacts or crashing very quickly in 3dmark, when you find your max you probably won't have it to loop it at all :)
If you REALLY want to make sure it is stable it couldn't hurt to run 3dmark05 for 30-60min nonstop. If your machine doesn't melt by then it should be ok, lol.

Still using the stock HSF on that card? If so, may want to get a better HSF like the VGA silencer.

can you OC the card to XT speeds and play games fine? I never liked ATI tools for it always gave me poor cap results when I can easily do much higher than it states.

thanks for the help guys. I will try changing some of the settings when I get some time off work. I will look into getting a better cooler for it too. I'll post again after i've experimented.

which would be better cooler the a 9800 pro? the VGA Silencer rev3 or the ATI silencer 1? Would I be able to keep my stock ramsinks or should I change them? If I have to change them what would b a good brand to get? Should I use Arctic Silver 5 to put the cooler on? Sorry for all the questions guys but i've never had to replace my Video card cooler before.

thanks for the quick reply wusy, I will probably order that in the next day or too. Hopefully I will be able to OC the card by a decent amount after it's on. Thanks again.

just thought I would give you guys an update. Thanks for the suggestion of the VGA Silencer rev.3. I finally got my card to go to XT Speeds and it stays stable there now. Thinking about flashing it now. Haven't tried to push it any farther yet b/c that was my goal, but I might go ahead and see what my limits are. Thanks again for all the help everyone.

Thinking about flashing it now.
Whoa, easy bro. In your first post you claim to have a r350 core. You need the r360 core if you wanna flash to the XT BIOS

I had noticed that a lot of people with the r350 core can successfully do the flash as long as their cards can already do those speeds safely without artifacts. In Willamette's sticky about this he had the r350 core.

Some things AUTOMATICALLY artifact if you do it, no matter what clocks. The artifact isn't like snow or shards, either...it's weird from what I've heard (all my 9800s have been r360  ). Your OC will also go down since memtimings will be tightened.

Maxtor disgraces the six letters that make Matrox.

So you think it's better for me to just keep at XT speeds with the Pro bios? I thought tighter memory timings would improve performance?

Yeah, but chances are your ram will need to run slower to keep at those timings.

thanks for the quick reply ned, that makes sense now. I think I will just keep my card running at (418/372) running pretty good right now. increased my 3dmark03 by 500 points. HL2 and Doom3 run nice and smooth now.
