What just happened to my router/modem??

Hey Folks:
Odd thing happened nite before last. Around 9:30 p.m. my modem
(Speedstream 5360) began flashing the act and enet lights in rhythm
with the Internet light (not the lnk/act light of my Netgear RT314
that flashes away when I'm downloading something). It did this for
about eight minutes. I turned off the computer about four minutes
into the light show, and the modem and rounter continued flashing
anyway for another four minutes. Can anyone tell my what this might
mean? I called Sympatico to see if they were uploading to the modem
but the guy on the other end of the help line had no idea (they never
do) what was going on.
Just a wild thought. Could a virus write itself to the
Router's ROM? I am vaguely worried and extremely curious. Ken
