I have two computers in my house, connected through a 3COM Hub. I set both computers up using the 'Network Setup Wizard' from within Windows XP, and it worked great. However, just a little while ago the Network crashed for some unknown reason and I haven't been able to solve the problem.
I can run the 'Network Setup Wizard' again on both machines (and I have), and it works fine for a while. After about 10 minutes, the network just crashes. I am unable to look at shared files on the other machine, and vice versa. The Printer error I also get says something about 'spooler' and 'rpc'.
I didnt see how you were accessing the internet ICS Modem , Cable, DSL, etc.
Make sure this isnt caused by using differnt user names and passwords. Try setting up a user on XP and using that user name and password on the other machine. Then look for a firewall on the XP that is blocking you access for sharing. On Win98 I use NetBeiu (SPELL) to set up file sharing and printer sharing which also has to be set up.
Make sure you use the same workgroup name.
Make sure the computer names are different.
How do you know the Hub is still good?
I had a HUB go bad due to lightning hitting my telephone pole in the back yard. Somehow it killed my 3Com Hub. I replaced it with a Linksys Workgroup Switch and it works great.
A cable could be bad also.
Try pinging the HUB???
OPEN A dos window and type CMD <ENTER>
From the window that comes up you should be able to run winipcfg. It should show the IP address of the HUB, if not you are not connecting. If you can see it from one comptuer and not from the other, it may be the cable.
