I now carry around a Palm device, a cell phone, and, when I drive, an
mp3 player on which I listen to recorded books.

Does anyone know if the mp3 player on the treo 650 can be used while
the device is still functioning as a phone? I don't want to talk on
the phone and listen to books or music at the same time, but I do want
my listening interupted if someone is calling me.

ALso, book listening is facilitated if you can put the device into
reverse for a few sesonds or so, (less than a full "track") so that you
can listen again to the sentences that you couldn't pay attention to
when that bastard cut you off. Can the Treo do that? My wife's 7135
apparently cannot.

TIA

Hello Hank,

This is Kevin from palmOne. You can indeed listen to MP3s and still
receive calls. Not certain about rewinding book reading software,
though probably someone here can add their experience.

Sincerely
Kevin

I am under the impression that MP3 playing is handled by
a separate DSP/chip? to do the decoding etc. I'm guessing
that you feed it an address (and length?) and tell it to "play".
After that you can send it instructions to pause, resume,
and stop. I think the problem with rewind is that the chip
would have to support it -- "rewind", then when you release
the button, "stop rewind". The chip might do something like
just decrement (slowly) the address. It would have to remember
the original start address too. So if the chip doesn't support
this the software has no way of knowing the address the
DSP is currently at in order to "back it up".

I would expect the same DSP to be used for any sort of audio
playback from memory so book or MP3 or wav, etc. would be
the same. If it doesn't do it for MP3s it's not going to do it for
anything else. And I suspect it's a matter of what the chip
supports and not a matter of software not utilizing the feature.

(all wild speculation)

Seidio also has several products (headphones, adaptors, etc.)
for the Treo 650 including many with a retractable cable but
I don't know how well they work.

It would be nice to have a bluetooth stereo headset with a
microphone which can be used either for listening to music
or talking on the phone but I don't know if it's possible
to make one for this phone.

OK I've just placed an order for a Seidio 2 in 1 Over-the-Ear
Retractable Headset for Treo 650. I should get it next week
and will let you know how good it is.
