I've seen test's that have shown that the 3100 will hit 2.4ghz+.
What sort of speeds are you hitting with this processor?

Will tell you soon,Asus K8N(NF3-250) turning up tomorrow,I'm not intending to push it to it's limit's,don't want to break it though.
I'm just hoping for 2.4ghz(up from 1.8).£60 chip....haha.
That'll do me fine.
Presently i have an xp2000+ on a Asrock K7u-880.
ps,read a review that claimed >2.5ghz on air cooling.

The story so far.
2204mhz,979htl,406 ddr,9X,cpu 1.45v,9x,44 c. fsb at 244.
So how do i go over 250? up the voltage to 1.5 and change the htt from 4 to 3?.
Where's the cpu voltage adjuster?
What do you reckon?
2249mhz,999.999htl,415ddr(vdata pc3200),9x,45 c,1.45v,250fsb.
I'm guessing that i need >1.45v to go faster, could do with some faster ddr as well really.
oh well, this'll do for now,but where is the cpu voltage adjuster's on Asus K8N?

There is a big red knob on the motherboard by the CPU. Turn it clockwise until you see a faint red glow coming from the heatsink.

Looking to build a rig using this setup for a friend. Probably using the exact same gear as in the writeup petrolhead linked to earlier. Will post up my results when I finish. But I think my biggest issue it with the RAM. Not sure what to buy. I want to buy the fast a$$ Corsair stuff (DDR500 or above), but I can't see spending DOUBLE the price for it versus the run of the mill DDR400. How much do I stand to gain by getting the faster RAM? This IS suppose to be a budget computer right? So is it worth it? I'm leaning towards no....

Make sure it's the ValueVX though. The normal Value stuff still sucks.

I had thought about that, but I noticed in every write about this I read, they were using the same Corsair XMS series RAM. Figured I'd better do the same. But that's just too much to spend on a budget computer. I'm looking at some Geil Ultra.

I noticed the reviews. People are saying if you're OCing the CPU then that RAM is great... but if you're OCing the RAM, find something else. I'm not really advancing the RAM at all am I? Also, should I worry about the Geil's 2.5-4-4 timings versus others 2.5-3-3?

I'm not sure what you mean by looking for DDR500... you want to hit at least DDR500?
And Winbond UTT is a die type (actually just untested stuff) that scales very well with voltages if you're overclocking.

Well, I noticed in both THG's Sempron OC writeup AND the write up linked to previously in this thread, they are using Corsair XMS RAM rated up to DDR500 or 550. Noting that when they OC to around 2.4G, the threshold for DDR400 is reached. So they reduce the RAM multiplier (to 1:11 I think) and can continue clocking up. Maybe I just took it as they needed the DDR500 RAM for this? I must be reading it wrong? If I can do 2.4G with the Geil RAM you linked me to, that's fine with me.

That THG overclock was pretty measely. If you pick up a Sempron 3100+ Palermo, you can probably hit 275x9 on decent aircooling. Then knock in the 180MHz RAM divider and run some Winbond UTT at 250MHz or so 2-2-2-x. You could get the Corsair but that'll be much more expensive and no better performance than the UTT at low latencies.

Yeah, the THG review was a little lame. They stopped way too early. Should have continued until it was goo! lol Anyway, you recommend the Palermo core? Noticed on the other writeup, they were using the Paris core. Did pretty well with that. What real difference will I see between the two?
And your RAM talk was over my head. Sorry. I got the lump of it though. Go with a low latency regular ol' DDR400 for like 90 bucks.

Yeah, the Palermo core is the new revision, 90nm instead of 130nm so should overclock a bit better.
As for the RAM, I meant you can pick up some cheaper DDR400 UTT sticks and overclock them instead of getting very expensive DDR500 or whatever. They'll give you near the same performance. Look for the OCZ ValueVX stuff. They're about $105 at newegg.

Newegg just had OCZ's stuff labeled "Value Series". No "VX" anywhere. So not sure if that's the same stuff you are talking about. I'm looking at these:

Yep. IIRC that Epox has vdimm up to 3.2V so you should be able to unlock some of the VX's potential.

Depends, where you go, but I think you can pick one up for ~$40 at newegg. Be careful though, there's a lot of imcompatability issues with it.

And I don't even mean it just won't work, I'm talking fried DIMMs and such. Not a pretty sight.
