Bench mark utilities

What are the best bench marking utilities and where do I get them? Free would be good. I have a Gigabyte mobo w/Athlon 64 3000+ 939, Geforce 5700 AGP, 1 gig of ram. My machine does not seem to run all that well. I just installed a new
Gigabyte rocket cooler, (yes I installed it correctly) and when I tried to turn the CPU up a few notches it seized up on me. The temp according to SIS Sandra is 27c. I have never seen it go much over 40c. If my head was'nt shaved I would pull my hair out. Any help, suggestions, flames, would be great. Thanks.

What do you mean by not running well? Like in what kind of applications does it run crap?

Its not so much what applications don't run well. It's the hickups that I have been experiencing. Hangups during shutdown when shut down should be almost immidiate. I realize that XP takes time just before shut down to close applications and end services but it takes often a full 2 minutes, if it shuts down at all. Thsi problem isn't constant either. Maby its just me and this is normal. When I first put this machine together it ran well for about a week or two and then I started having problems. I'm running Norton Internet Security 2004, which I know runs constantly in the background as well as Microsoft Anti-Spyware. Nortons intrusion detection part of the app. ends up being disabled for some reason. Perhaps I got a bug. If I think of any thing more, I'll let you know.
