my computer shows a usb mass storage device connected even when it is not connected

do you have a smart card reader installed in you PC or USB printer?

Whats the make model of the computer? As i have seen PC's with an in built usb drive.

Also, having iPods, digital cameras, or smart phones connected to PCs will do show up as USB Mass Storage devices.

My printer shows up as mass storage even (has a built in card reader).

Also if you had a unhooked the device try plugging it back in, and in the bottom right corner of your screen click the icon for remove device successfully. Good luck.
