I just got an ATI Xpert 98 video card to replace the original STB
PowerGraph 64 in an old Aladdin P5-120 upgraded to an Evergreen Spectra
AMD K6-II and a bios from MR BIOS.
When I installed the card, the display reverted to VGA and Windows, with
difficulty, first installs the card as a basic VGA PCI card. According
to the ATI instructions, I am to let this proceed but not reboot, but
insead run the ATI installation CD to set up the card with the right
drivers. However, I can never get that far. Windows installs the
monitor, then locks up. I tried safe mode once (which now won't load at
all with this card), and then even reinstalling Windows 98SE to try to
use what appeared to be the Rage drivers that came with Windows 98SE,
but I got the same lockup.
I have 2 PCI slots now "setup" this way. What do I need to do to make
this card work, since it is one of the very few "newer" cards that could
supposedly work with the older PCI bus on the Aladdin. The card's box
does give 2001 copyrights, etc., so it's definitely not first
generation, but it's supposed to be based on the Rage XL chipset. Thanks,
