Verizon now has CDMA roaming in major cities in China. Has anyone used this
service and have any experience or comments to share? I will be traveling
there in a month and have the option of using my current cell phone on their
service or renting a GMS phone. Thanks for any comments.

I keep GSM phones for international travel and have used them in China quite
easily. SIM cards are widely available and very inexpensive (just don't buy
them at the airport). I've never heard that there is CDMA service in China
(and, frankly, I'm surprised that there is -- I thought CDMA was strictly a
North American phenomena at this point). However, I'd check Verizon's
pricing -- knowing how Verizon likes to nickel-and-dime, I can't imagine
roaming in China with Verizon would, in any way, be competitive with buying
a local SIM card, even if you have to buy a GSM phone (and I'd suggest
buying, rather than renting -- eBay has good, _unlocked_ GSM phones for
around $100 US).

nah, North America, parts of Asia, and parts of Australia. China? That's
news to me.

There is CDMA service in a handful of countries including Australia,
China, New Zealand, Israel, South Korea and a few other countries.
Nowhere near the number of countries that are GSM but there are
countries where you can roam. Also, just because these countries may
have CDMA does not mean that you can roam. Either the systems are
slightly incompatible or there's no roaming agreement.

For what it's worth, Verizon's webpage providing the information is
http://mobileoptions.vzw.com/inter [...] gions.html
and they claim to have CDMA in major Chinese cities. My local Verizon store
confirmed this and activated the international roaming for me. I did arrange
a cheap GSM backup and would use the Verizon phone for incoming calls
(briefly) as the tech support people told me that calls would be
transferred. I'll post the outcome in a few weeks.

The CDMA system in Japan is on the same cellular band as in the U.S.,
but the transmit and receive frequencies are reversed, so only specially
designed Japanese phones will work. But I understand that they are
planning to switch this year, so that other CDMA phones can roam on
them. Their phones also can use the "standard" configuration, so their
customers don't need to do a phone swap.

The CDMA roaming in China and South Korea is functional, including
roaming agreements.
