My wife was given a Gateway Essential 450, the machine works ok. But, it
only has 64 megs of memory. I would like to add 2 128 sticks. If I buy the
memory new, the cost would exceed the value of the computer. Can anyone
suggest a source of used memory (must be cheap)?

Try EBay, but check the seller's references carefully.
You need low-density PC100 or PC133 SDRAM.
