Just FYI, I have an old GP6-450 with 320MB RAM, 63GB of hard drive
space (came with 13G, I added a 50GB) running Win98SE upgraded from
98. I purchased a new 710XL for myself. Decided to upgrade the old
system for my 10 year old. It had been upgraded over the years with a
DVD and CD/RW drive, ZIP250, USB hub and some peripherals.

I puchased a copy of XP Home Edition and ran the install. Everything
went great! Just had to download new Sound Blaster XP drivers for the
BOSE surround speakers and subwoofer to work. I had backed up all the
application data and Documents folder, but the install preserved all
of it anyway. Installed Office 2003 Student/Teacher edition for him
and working great! The install put drivers in for the ethernet card I
added a few years ago, all the peripherals worked right away.

I was impressed! A PC purchased about 6 years ago being used by my
5th grader now, fine for internet and basic student doc editing!

If you go to www.powerleap.com you can also upgrade the CPU ...last
time I looked you could go up to P3- 1.4...I had a GP6-450 and was
able to add 768 megs of memory and the 1.4 PowerLeap CPU..
Gave it to my brother last year and it is still going strong...

I also upgraded my G6-400 with the PowerLeap 1.4GHz (and to 512MB of RAM) -
it is well well worth it. I think the price is down to $99 now.

PL-iP3/T 1.4 GHz Celeron Upgrade Kit with Heatsink Fan is the one I have.

Check www.powerleap.com. They also have a util (InSPECS) you can run at the
site that'll tell you which one will work.
