What does it mean if the display screen shows 1X rather than D for digital?

According to the new brochure that came with my new phone, 1X means the
phone is operating in IS2000 digital mode, and D means the phone is
operating in IS95 digital mode.

Can't get any more technical than that.

On my phone, 1x seems to mean Verizon network, and D seems to means
Sprint PCS network.

Where are you in California that you can roam onto Sprint with a Verizon
phone? You sure can't down here.

It has nothing to do with the network. Lena's answer is correct.

SprintPCS SID 4183 is still in the PRL as part of Extended Network in
Northern California. Landed on it in a parking garage a few weeks ago.
As I understand it, SprintPCS 4145 in Southern California not only is
not in the PRL, but SprintPCS blocks VZW callers ($$ credit card call)
if you force your phone to acquire it.

What is the difference between 1X and D. My phone in NY shows 1X and also
in Florida. I seldom see D. I have an LG 4400. Sometimes in FL I don't
get any signal. Please explain and also offer suggestions. Thank You.

For the second time in this same thread:

D means the original deployment of CDMA digital, the proper acronym for
which escapes me at the moment.

1x is short for 1xRTT, which is the second generation of CDMA.

The only time you need to be concerned about seeing a D rather than a 1x is
if you are trying to use a data feature. For talking, it makes no
difference worth worrying about.

As for no signal in FL, have you recently (or ever) updated your PRL? Do
this by dialing *228 and selecting option 2 when the voice asks you.

It hasn't done so it quite a while. Perhaps it is no longer possible
here either.
