Last summer while visiting the Canadian Maritimes, I was not able to
make outbound calls on my VZW pre-paid phone (FreeUp service). I kept
getting a message that the call could not be completed as dialed.
In-bound calls were fine and I seem to remember were billed at the
regular roaming rate of 99 cents per minute.
When I posted this last year, someone had some recommended solution
which I have since misplaced. I am heading back next month and want to
be able to use the phone in an emergency.

Some Canadian cellular companies make you dial a '1' before the area
code. It's a real pain in the a**, given that my address book entries
only have the 10 digits. Could that have been your problem?

That was my guess, but I won't be certain until I get there. Hopefully
someone on this NG will have a definitive answer.

Call Verizon and ask if your pre-paid phone (FreeUp service) should work
in Canada.
