Hi everybody.

First of all my specs:

Win2K SP4
Athlon 1.4 GHz
512MB RAM
Ati Radeon 9000 64 MB

OK. Now to my problem.

I have recently installed ATI Catalyst 4.5 driver. Before that I had an
Omega driver. I reinstalled drivers since I have bought Far Cry and couldn't
get it to work on any of the drivers I got (omega drivers gave me flickering
textures, Catalyst drivers crashed the game with VPU exception).

So I installed Catalyst 4.5 . First Far Cry worked splendidly on Medium
conf. Than the nightmare started. I noticed slight graphics corruption when
I esc'd to the main menu - first the background, then the letters
themselves. Than the game became more and more corrupted (HUD, crosshair,
everything). Well, I said, Far Cry should probably wait for some better
conf.

But than I fired up UT2003 (which always worked splendidly) and was
shocked - same things started to happen! First the game ran fine, than HUD
and main menu got screwed up, than everything. I uninstalled Catalyst 4.5
and reverted to the old 4.1 drivers which I used since then - same thing!!!

Is my video card broken, or is there a driver glitch that can be helped?

Please help me since I'm getting desperate.

Thanks. Cheers!

It does sound like the video card is overheating.

OK I wasn't very precise. The card has active cooling and it was adequate
until now, worked perfectly even last year with +30c outside.

I could get a cooler for my VGA, but is it possible that something else is
the cause? Anybody with simmilar experiences?

If the card is overclocked, try setting it back to normal.
Hopefully the card is still under warranty.
Of course you checked to see that the fan was turning freely and even tried
running the PC with the cover off and a room fan blowing on it to check if
overheating is the problem?

I had terrible problems with the Omega drivers. Don't know why, since
many others love them. But just uninstalling didn't help. I had to
use Drive Cleaner 3 in safe mode to completely get rid of all
the previous muck I had installed. Reinstalling the Catalyst drivers
got me back to "normal".

Does the cat-uninstaller not work with Omega drivers?

Me again.

No, overheating is definitely not a problem, I even bought a new fan for my
video-card, to no avail.

I'd like to point out that all the problems started when I installed
Catalyst 4.5 drivers. They seem to have "put" something in my comp that you
can't get rid off even when unistalling and installing new drivers. I find
it unlikely that the video-card broke down right after installing the new
drivers.

What I find most irritating is the erratic behaviour of the problem. For
instance, I turn on Far Cry, everything is great, then on the second half of
the level everything non-3d (and sometimes even some 3d textures) becomes
corrupted (smudge, pixelated, whatever) then sometimes with no apparent
reason it becomes totally smooth and nice again.

I'll try this Drive Clenaer but I'm becoming doubtful. How is it possible
that noone has problems simmilar to these?

Thanks to everybody who tried to help.

Cheers!

I had the same problem with Links 2003 which is basically a 2D program.
Switched back to 4.4 and all was fine. It is definitely not a heat problem.
