I dropped a note to the group on this a while ago and wrote to Gateway twice
too. Nobody responded. I write again because I seemingly have confirmed
earlier suspicions. Microsoft won't deal with me. They turn me back to
Gateway ... who don't respond to my e-mails!
I installed SP2 from MS's CD and also by download and couldn't boot back
into normal Windows XP. After uninstalling SP2 in Safe Mode I could boot
normally again. I installed a new 120 Gig HDD that I had promised myself and
clean installed the Gateway OEM XP that came with the machine. Again I
installed SP2 from the CD and by automatic download.
Same thing! Couldn't boot into normal Windows, but could after I uninstalled
SP2 in Safe Mode. Anybody else get this? With Gateway not answering, how do
I deal with it? I'd like to get into SP2 since I've been troubled with
Internet Explorer irregularities and adware stuff. Don't tell me to buy a
new copy of XP. We should be able to make this one work ... right? Denzil.

I had the same problem with one of my machines. I couldn't go back to the
last best boot or a normal boot. Only Safe Mode. Finally I did get a
message that "Sorry but Windows is shutting down because"......and it
indicated that my graphics card was at fault. I removed and replace the
card and everything went smooth as silk. Just telling you so that maybe you
might make sure that all hardware has been "signed" by Microsoft.
Just a thought!!
