TV card and cable modem problem

I have a cable modem for high speed service. Yesterday, I bought a cable
splitter, connected the cable feed to the In feed of the splitter,
connected one of the OUTs to the cable modem, and the other OUT to my TV
tuner card of my PC. Everything worked OK last night -- I had cable
access, and also had all the cable TV channels on my PC. This morning,
howrver, I noticed that internet access was quite slow, and a little later,
I lost all internet access. The cable modem's lights were off (except for
power), i.e., the modem was not providing connectivity to my PC. I
disconnected the splitter from the main cable feed, which I connected again
to the cable modem and I got my connectivity back.

I am puzzled by this whole thing. What might explain why it worked last
night and didn't this morning? Is the explanation that the splitter
reduces the strength of the signal, and if for whatever reason the incoming
signal is not strong enough, the modem loses connectivity when there is a
splitter? If that is the explanation, will one of those cable signal
boosters one gets from Radioshack make enough of a difference? Or is the
problem something else?

Thanks,

P.

All I know that if you use a spliter on your cable connection to connect a
cabble modem, the splitter should be 5-1000MHz to not loose
connectivity.
