Whats a good way to make money fast early in the game? I don't seem to be
getting much money from just doing the missions and I want to buy some
safehouses.

Stop to kill the drug dealers when you see them, they carry 2,000 each. Take
the money to the off track betting and bet on some horse races. Check the
map that came with the game if you don't know where that's at.

drug dealers as has been pointed out. do the 'side missions' of
ambulance etc or taxi driving. There's no real need to have tons of
cash too early as you can't really buy much apart from a couple of
second base houses. The weapons purchases come later and there are
many free ones to be had. There is also, or WAS also a neat little
trick to pull once ammunation is open properly which can save you a
lot of cash. This trick may have been 'fixed' in the newer versions
though

Gambling. Save your game, go to OTB and bet as much as you can on the horse
with the longest odds. Reload until you win, and then repeat.
I ended up with $600,000 after a few goes that way :-)

as I remember, quite early in the game you can get the van for stealing
from houses, you can get tv's and stereos for cash.....

I recommend the fire truck mission. Do it through level 12 and you'll have
about $50,000 (plus you'll be fire-proof, which helps in a couple of the
missions).
VC veterans, fear not: the SA fire mission is FAR easier than the VC one.
You may even have fun doing it. Imagine that.
Get a truck (cause a fire) and save it in CJ's garage. It's an easy
mission, but with bad luck it may take a couple of tries.

Yeah, this is the best way, you can make millions in under an hour,
depending on luck.

As has been posted elsewhere, drug dealers are the easiest source. Now,
when I first heard this I went cruising around looking for them, but only
found 1!
A couple of missions later and they are constantly walking into our
neighbourhood. I'm not sure what the change was, but either way, look for a
white guy in a grey/white hooded top - with his hood up - or a black guy
with a black sleeveless top, shades and woollen cap on. They tend to stand
still for half a minute or so with their hands together, then move on.
Beware, as these guys have pistols and react immediately if you do not
target them from directly behind.
One head shot from behind does the trick and it is easy to rack up $10,000
in 5 minutes play.

Definitely gambling on the horsies. Once you get the hang of it, it's
quite ease to predict possible win occurrences. The key is to know when
to pick either the lamest or second to lamest horse, and always put on
between $20,000 - $50,000.
I managed to rack up winnings of $17,500,000 in just 20 minutes!!
Woo-hoo!
Well, I have been playing SA since last October... so plenty of time to
figure stuff like this out. =)
For some quick small cash, the best way is to play high-roller
Blackjack in one of the casinos. Good fun too - just don't kill anyone
or you get the 'pool' glitch.

I read about that here when the PS2 version came out, but the betting shop
is a long way from CJ's house! Is there a quick route there that I haven't
found, or do I have to keep driving to the betting shop all the time?

Yeah, do the gambling from CJ's house just until you have enough cash to buy
the property in Jefferson. Then it's a quick trip to the OTB...

Are you talking about the one in Mongomery? There's also one on an
east-west street under the Mulholland Intersection (not marked on the map).
Not sure if it's open near the beginning of the game, but check it out.
(You know that place under the Intersection where the guys stop to wait for
CJ when they're riding bikes home from the cemetery? It's the block just
south of there, midway along the block.)

The horse betting one doesnt work.
I've bet all my money on the horse with the worst odds about 10 times
and the thing never wins!

I backed the second to worst odds horse and raised loads of money. It
wins about 1 in 5 times.

Just persist with missions! In GTA3, that's the best way to get money! The
average is about $20,000 on Staunton Island.
Archived from groups: alt.games.grand-theft-auto (More info?)
yes it does. occasionally you'll have a run where it'll never seem to win and you lose a lot of
money - if that happens then just go back to your last save and try again
