Hello All

Opinions wanted please. I have just brought Doom 3 and it's obvious I
need to upgrade the Graphics card.

Current System

A7N8X-E Deluxe

Barton XP2800 running as XP3200 200Mhz FSB

512Mb Dual channel RAM

72Gb WD Raptor

Enermax 550w PSU

Coolermaster actc case

Current Video Card

Gainward Ti4200 Golden sample OC core 300Mhz Mem 502Mhz

At the price point I have it seems I can choose between either of the
above cards a plain vanilla FX5900 or the ultra version of the 5700 I
have read a few specs and reviews and appreciate that technically the
5900 is more advanced but the 5700 Ultra has some impressive figures
in terms of clock speeds etc. Anybody here tried both and come to a
conclusion.

TIA

Regards

Andy Lee

Andy,

This isn't personal experience, but:

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1634115,00.asp

Unfortunately, it doesn't include the plain 5900, just the Ultra. I presume
that the 5900 will do better than the 5700 Ultra, though. (If the 5900 is
like other nVidia cards, the 5900 can be overclocked to performance that
approaches the Ultra.)

Similarly,

For an ancient article (nearly 6 months old, see:)

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1552184,00.asp

This suggests that the performance of the 5900 is much better than the 5700
ultra, although Doom3 isn't included.

Have fun.

The 5900 is in actuality far faster than the high end 5700 because the 5900
has the full 256 mbit memory interface, while the 5700 has the smaller 128
mbit interface.
The 5700's clock speeds cannot overcome this difference.

Thanks to both you guys. Seems to me it will be a FX5900 when I can
find one at the right price

Thanks again

Hey,

Good choice. Keep an eye for an Albatron GeForce FX 5900XT. Sweet spot
in the market right now as far as price and performance goes, plus the
added VIVO (captures an s-video or av video input) you can't go wrong
with. Easy to overclock too. Will play Doom III and Far Cry comfortably.

When I bought mine, it was about $190. That was about four months ago,
however.
