Is the Sound card showing in the Device Manager as installed under Sound Devices or Other Devices?

Have you checked the settings in the Control Panel under Sound?

The source of the problem is the sound drivers built into the OS. They were bad drivers provided by the chip manufactures back in Vista Beta and they have never been fixed.
